A man is traveling in the cold. He's experiencing things he's never experienced before. "Such fact impressed him as being cold and uncomfortable, and that was all. It did not lead him to meditate upon his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon man's frailty in general, able only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold; and from there on it did not lead him to the conjectural field of immortality and man's place in the universe." This states how uncomfortable he felt in the cold and how he is struggling withe the cold.

The man woke up with a plan to explore his surroundings. He looked and saw that it was snowing and it was probably his first time seeing snow. So he grabs his snow gear and walks outside. It states in the passage "There was no sun nor hint of sun, though there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun." This means he was struggling because he misses the warmth and the cold isn't cordial to him anymore.

A man is being prosecuted for a crime. His sentence is a death sentence so he was gonna get executed. In the passage it states "The man's hands were behind his back, the wrists bound with a cord. A rope closely encircled his neck. It was attached to a stout cross-timber above his head and the slack fell to the level of his knees." This means he was being lynched for his execution.

Mrs. Sommers is a struggling mother that has a low paying job. She tries her best to get her kids stuff they need such as clothes. In the story it says "She had seen some beautiful patterns, veritable bargains in the shop windows. And still there would be left enough for new stockings-two pairs apiece-and what darning that would save for a while!" So she basically wants to get stuff that will last so she doesn't have to waste money every time something rips, tears, or breaks.

The person was studying a lot about eclipse's. They have an obsession with eclipses's and is trying to plant for the upcoming eclipse. In the passage it says "My recollections of the great event, and the incidents of the day, are as vivid as if they had occurred but yesterday." This shows how prepared he was for the eclipse that happened in his hometown.
