Jupiter adalah planet yang pertama kali terbentuk dan merupakan planet terbesar di dalam tata surya. Jupiter hampir sepenuhnya terdiri dari hidrogen, dengan sekitar 10% volumenya terdiri dari helium. Meskipun ada unsur lain selain hidrogen dan helium ditemukan pada atmosfer Jupiter, tapi sebagian besar massanya tetap dipegang oleh dua elemen dasar tersebut.
Massa Jupiter adalah seperseribu massa Matahari. Jika dibandingkan dengan planet-planet lain di Tata Surya, massa Jupiter lebih besar dua setengah kali dari jumlah massa planet-planet lain tersebut.
Berbagai penelitian menemukan 16 satelit atau bulan yang mengorbit di Jupiter. Empat bulan terbesar Jupiter, yaitu Io, Europa, Ganymed dan Kallisto yang diamati Galileo Galilei, diduga mengandung air dalam bentuk beku. Planet gas ini tidak memiliki permukaan padat untuk didarati wahana penelitian. Wahana riset Juno misalnya mengorbit sejarak 4.000 km di atas permukaan planet.
