4 Huck and Jim continue to float down the river on the raft, occasionally stopping into towns to “borrow” supplies. One day, they come upon a sinking steamboat, and Huck wants to go on board because that is what Tom would do; Jim does not want to board the ship. Yet and still, they board the ship and see a pair of robbers threatening to kill another robber, so Huck and Jim quickly leave for fear of danger and realize that their raft is gone. They steal the robbers’ escape boat and run into a watchman on the river. Huck makes up a story about how his family is on the sinking steamboat, and the watchman goes over to save them, but it is revealed that the robbers died. The two get some of the robbers’ loot and find their raft. Afterwards, Huck and Jim talk about kings and have a debate about language. They continue down the river, but a fog separates the two of them and Huck struggles to find Jim again. When he does, he convinces Jim that he dreamt the whole ordeal, but Jim sees through that soon enough.

6 Jim and Huck enjoy time on the river, naked. One day, Huck finds a canoe and goes to shore, only to be bombarded by two men who want Huck to let them stay on the raft. Huck relents, and questions the ratty pair, who are an older gentleman of seventy and a man of thirty. Both reveal themselves to be criminals on the lam for dirty schemes. The younger man begins to cry and claims that he ia a Duke; the older man follow suit and says that he is a King. due to this, Huck and Jim must address them in a royal fashion and wait on them. However, Huck quickly realizes that the men are completely lying, but he pays no mind. The Duke and Dauphin ask Jim if he is a runaway, and Huck comes up with a clever lie about him being an orphan and how it is more convenient to travel at night. Next morning, the Duke and Dauphin decide to put on a Shakespeare play for the next town they come to, but once there they see that everyone is at a camp meeting. Assessing the situation, the Dauphin gets up and preaches and gets the people to hand him money; the Duke conned some more money at the printing press while making a fake flier about Jim being a runaway slave. This way, they can pretend that they have caught Jim and will avoid further questioning on the river.
