หิมะถล่มเป็นภัยธรรมชาติที่ในเขตภูเขาในฤดูหนาว หิมะถล่มขนาดใหญ่สามารถถล่มเป็นระยะทางได้ยาวหลายๆกิโลเมตรและสร้างความเสียหายกับป่า บ้านเรือน ชีวิต หรือ อะไรก็ตามที่อยู่ในแนวการถล่ม ตัวอย่างของหิมะถล่มที่สร้างความเสียหายมากคือที่ เมือง Montroc ประเทศฝรั่งเศส เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2542 หิมะราวๆ 300,000 ลูกบาศก์เมตร ถล่มลงมาตามความชันราวๆ 30 องศาของภูเขาจนมีความเร็วถึง 100 กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมง ภัยหิมะถล่มครั้งนั้นส่งผลให้มีผู้เสียชีวิต 12 คนซึ่งอยู่ในบ้านพักขณะเกิดเหตุ หิมะถล่มได้ฝั่งบ้านพักด้วยความลึก 5 เมตรด้วยปริมาณหิมะราวๆ 100,000 ตัน

ผิวหน้าของหิมะมีความหนาแน่นกว่าข้างล่าง ข้างบนจึงหนักมาก จนหิมะด้านล่างรับไม่ไหวจึงได้ สไลต์ตัวลงมาสู่ที่ต่ำ อาจเกิดได้หลายทางเช่น เสียงดัง เกิดการสั่นไหวอย่างแรง
