Dari etimologinya Kata "tinju" adalah terjemahan dari kata Inggris "boxing"/"Pugilism". Kata Pugilism berasal dari kata latin, pugilatus atau pinjaman dari kata yunani Pugno, Pignis, Pugnare, yang menandakan segala sesuatu yang berbentuk kotak atau "Box" dalam bahasa Inggrisnya.
Teknik dalam permainan tinju:
1. jab yaitu melakukanya dengan pukulan yang cepat lurus dilemparkan dengan tangan memimpin dari posisi penjaga.
2. Cross yaitu melakukan Pukulan kuat dan lurus yang dilemparkan dengan tangan belakang.
3. Slip atau slipping yaitu memutar tubuh sedikit sehingga pukulan yang masuk akan melewati tanpa bahaya di samping kepala.
