Hemlock
Conium maculatum atau biasa disebut dengan racun hemlock adalah adalah tanaman biennial berbunga yang sangat beracun. Tanaman ini berasal dari Eropa dan Afrika Utara. Mampu hidup di berbagai lingkungan, dan telah dinaturalisasi dengan luas ke lokasi di luar tempat asalnya.
Hemlock memiliki beberapa nama atau sebutan lain yaitu English hemlock, the Australian carrot fern, the Irish devil's bread atau devil's porridge, poison parsley, spotted corobane dan spotted hemlock.
Conium berasal dari κώνειον - kṓneion Yunani Kuno: 'hemlock'. Nama ini berhubungan dengan kata 'konas' yang artinya 'berputar', mengacu pada vertigo, salah satu gejala yang timbul jika menelan tanaman ini.
Hemlock adalah tanaman herba biennial berbunga yang tumbuh setiap musim semi setinggi 1,5-2,5 m dengan batang yang mulus, hijau, berongga, biasanya berbintik atau bercoreng warna merah atau ungu di bagian bawah batang. Tanaman ini tumbuh di daerah lembab. tetapi juga tumbuh di padang rumput yang cenderung kering, pinggir jalan, dan tanah yang terganggu. Semua bagian tanaman ini beracun, tetapi ketika sudah dikeringkan, kadar racunnya sangat berkurang meskipun tidak sepenuhnya hilang.
Conium mengandung suatu zat kimia bernama coniine. Dalam konsentrasi yang cukup tinggi, coniine berbahaya bagi manusia dan hewan terbaik. Pada orang dewasa, jika terkonsumsi lebih dari 100 mg (0,1 gram) coniine (sekitar enam hingga delapan daun segar, atau sejumlah kecil biji atau akar) mungkin berakibat fatal seperti gagalnya beberapa organ tubuh.
Pada jaman Yunani kuno, hemlock digunakan untuk menghukum mati para tahanan. Korban racun hemlock paling terkenal adalah filsuf Socrates.
