Teen Relationships

    Teen relationships are important to some, while others believe they are a waste of time. Typically, teenagers tend to over value their relationships as they do not have the experience needed to separate a serious relationship from a casual courtship. Middle school and high school relationships usually don’t last  long, however, there is a chance for a lasting relationship. If you are in a relationship you have to take the good and the bad.

    There are statistics to teen relationships. The percentage of middle school relationships that last the three years until high school is less than ten percent, while eight percent of high school relationships work until marriage, and only five percent of the relationships that are started in high school lead to marriages that do not end in divorce. According to “Teens & Relationships” by Roger E. Hernandez in 1950 twenty-nine percent of americans thought it was acceptable for a girl to ask a guy out, while sixty-two percent thought it was unacceptable for a girl to ask out a guy. Now seventy percent say it is acceptable but still twenty-eight percent still think it is not. Eighty percent of guys say it is okay but sixty-two percent of girls say otherwise. But there are pros and cons to relationships with teens.

There are a lot of pros of teen relationships. Finding out that a boy likes you makes you feel pretty and popular boosting your self-esteem. Some teens need a self-esteem boost to help their everyday lives stay positive. Spending time with a boyfriend or girlfriend is fun. Some teens don’t get to go places with friends or a boyfriend so the time you have with them makes the time that you have with people at school so much better. Having a girlfriend makes you feel older and cooler. Being known as “Steven’s Girlfriend” gives a teenage girl a sense of identity and a place in the crowd. But, for every upside to middle school romance, there’s a pretty harsh downside.

Teens often get in a relationship and don’t even think about the things that could hurt them. According to imom.com she thinks that these are problems that all teens face, finding out 11.4 days later that he is over you destroys your self-esteem, affirming all of your middle-schooler suspicions that you are unattractive, awkward, and that no one really likes you.  Rejection is hard at any age but especially so at a stage when you feel physically, emotionally, and socially vulnerable. At this age, kids need good friends. But middle schoolers who have girlfriends or boyfriends miss out on great platonic relationships. Sometimes they break up with a romantic attachment to find that while they were all dreamy-eyed and in love, their other friendships cooled for lack of attention, leaving them “lost” in the social landscape.

Teen relationships have there ups and downs. They come with feelings that are both good and bad. Overall you should go into the relationships knowing that you could get hurt but you also have a small chance of getting married. Teen relationships are not a waste of time, they show you the mistakes that you can avoid when dating matters the most.
