the Cumberland gap travel across the Appalachians by thousands of people crossed the Appalachians on the wilderness road.Pioneers traveled by wagon and on foot.The wilderness road was a rocky dirt path barely wide enough for a wagon.The road was so bumpy that wagons often broke apart as they traveled over it.Once across the mountains,settles journeyed farther west on river.Many traveled on the Ohio river.Flatboats carried families, their animals, and their belongings down the river.A flatboat was a large rectangular boat partly covered by a roof.

Lewis and Clark learn through out their trip in the west that there was no direct water route to the pacific ocean. crazy horse rode in battle in the late 1800s.
