Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party- open to all residents of the state
The Voting Rights Act: MLK launched a voting rights campaign in Selma, VRA allowed federal officials to register voters; also outlaw poll tax
The Great Society: governmental action initiated by President Johnson between 1965-1967 to promote the general welfare (health services, funding for schools); response to prosperity instead of depression

MLK called for a Bill of Rights for the disadvantaged
Malcolm X: insisted that blacks rely on their own efforts to make a difference, not whites

The Rise of Black Power: black power means black freedom from whites who try to dictate the movement's goals
