Jim Lawson had the most effective strategy for combating racism in the 1960s because he aimed to train the youth to rebel nonviolently, which led to the emergence of SNCC.

-parents get involved by boycotting downtown shops
-formation of SNCC

The Civil Rights Act of 1964: prohibits racial discrimination in employment, institutions, and privately owned public accommodations- however, did not mention voting

Freedom Summer: civil rights groups like SNCC, CORE, and NAACP spent a summer launching a voter registration drive; very violent (~25 black people died bc of FS)
Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party- open to all residents of the state

The Voting Rights Act: MLK launched a voting rights campaign in Selma, VRA allowed federal officials to register voters; also outlaw poll tax

The Great Society: governmental action initiated by President Johnson between 1965-1967 to promote the general welfare (health services, funding for schools); response to prosperity instead of depression
tried to completely eradicate poverty

The War on Poverty: 40-50 million poor whites in the US... ppl thought it was bc of imbalance or economic power or absence of work ethic... not taking into considering the range of incomes or lack of jobs might affect it

Freedom and Equality: "freedom from want" Johnson; want the relationship between F and E to b redefined-- blacks were free, but not equal w/ whites

The Changing Black Movement: worried about reverse discrimination?

The Ghetto Uprisings: battles between angry black ppl and white police (50000 ppl took part in the rebellions)
very expensive cleanup- many feared another civil war was on the way
MLK called for a Bill of Rights for the disadvantaged

Malcolm X: insisted that blacks rely on their own efforts to make a difference, not whites
"American nightmare"

The Rise of Black Power: black power means black freedom from whites who try to dictate the movement's goals
imprecise idea... died down because of Vietnam war
