Güney Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi’nde, Adıyaman ili sınırları içindedir. 1988 yılında ilan edilmiştir.[2] Yüz ölçümü 13.827 hektardır. Milli parkın kaynak değeri eski çağlarda “Kommagene” olarak bilinen, bu alanda bulunan arkeolojik kalıntılardır. Antiochos tümülüsü ve buradaki dev heykeller, Eskikale, Yenikale, Karakuş Tepe ve Cendere Köprüsü milli park içinde kalan kültürel değerlerdir.[1] Doğu ve batı teraslarında Antiochos ile tanrı-tanrıça heykellerinin yanı sıra aslan ve kartal heykelleri bulunmaktadır. Batı terasında eşsiz bir aslanlı horoskop yer almaktadır. Heykeller Helenistik, Pers sanatı ve Kommagene ülkesinin özgün sanatı harmanlanarak yontulmuştur. Bu anlamda Nemrut Dağına “batı ve doğu uygarlığının köprüsü” denebilir.
Nemrut or Nemrud (Turkish: Nemrut Dağı; Kurdish: Çiyayê Nemrûdê; Armenian: Նեմրութ լեռ) is a 2,134-metre-high (7,001 ft) mountain in southeastern Turkey, notable for the summit where a number of large statues are erected around what is assumed to be a royal tomb from the 1st century BC.
The name is a relatively modern one, dating back to the Middle Ages. In Armenian legend, Hayk defeated the Biblical king Nimrod (equated with Bel) and buried him in these mountains. Nemrut is most likely to have received its name from an Armenian tradition in which Nimrod was killed by an arrow by Hayk during a massive battle between two rival armies of giants to the south-east of Lake Van.
