World War I and the U.S.’s turn to isolationism as a major factor in the rise of Nativism in the 1920s. A major example of this would be the Immigration Act of 1924 , which put severe restrictions on the number of people who would be allowed into the United States from every county. Officially, it limited the yearly number of immigrants from ANY country to 2% of the number of people from that country who were already IN the United States.
Maybe the most well-known example of nativism in the 1920s would be the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan . It was created after the Civil War, but faded from activity following the end of the Reconstruction Era . This “new” version was created in Atlanta in 1915, but grew in popularity in the early 1920s. They saw increased membership in large cities throughout the United States, not just in the South. Also unlike the earlier version, the new version was not focused SOLELY on denying African Americans their rights, but also became anti- Catholic , anti-immigrant, anti- women’s suffrage , and was in favor of “10
