Infatti non solo consente di eseguire più programmi contemporaneamente, dando origine al fenomeno del Multitasking, ma consente anche di migliorare l'efficienza del processore. Ad esempio, quando bisogna eseguire un'operazione di Input-Output, il processore non può proseguire l'elaborazione del processo in esecuzione fino al completamento dell'operazione...
Essendo le operazioni di Input-Output molto più lente del processore stesso, sarebbe un inutile spreco di tempo e risorse se il processore rimanesse bloccato fino al completamento delle operazioni di Input-Output, Per questo esse vengono affidate al Sistema operativo che intanto assegna l'uso del processore ad un altro processo. In questo modo si massimizza l'uso delle risorse del sistema e si evitano perdite di tempo ^_~
