She stood behind him for 12 years, the scent of his cologne like a breath of fresh air when you reach the outsides of the city, his 'morning' and 'good night' like the sound of the ambulance sirens echoing through the streets of new york, always bearing some hidden meaning and the next thing she will have to assist them with. She thought she was there for herself, for the family the building and its residents of 15 hour week days have become, but truly now that she is thinking about her wants and needs, the things she usually doesn't consider she is realizing she is here for him.
Because those good morning's and good night's have become a constant and that scent of his has become like stopping in your own driveway after a summer break that lasted too long. She realizes she never really stood behind him, always next to him. Their wins, their losses, their office, their promotions, their lives. It's hard when these things hit her like a speeding car down a deserted lane, when she leasts expects them.
She still goes through with it tho, he might be her favorite reason for sacrafice and sharing and partnership beyond any measures ever expected. But she wants to be happy now. She doesn't dare to include him in that wish though.
