1. Hold the marble 40 cm above the pan. With the marble in your hand, decide what 2 forces are acting on the marble. Are the forces balanced or unbalanced? Discuss your ideas with your group and record in your INB.
2. Predict what will happen if you release the marble from your hand. Record your prediction in your INB.
3. Let go of the marble. Record your observations of the marble's motion with your group and record them in your INB. (Do not be concerned about the crater that the marble makes in the pan. The flour is only there to keep the marble from moving once dropped.)
4. Repeat steps 1-3 4 more times. Does the marble move the same way each time? Discuss with your group how you could change the way the marbles moves. Record ideas in your INB.
5. Use a ruler to GENTLY roll the marble into the pan as shown in Figure 1. start the marble at the 30cm mark. Keep the ruler nearly flat. If you have one, use a camera to record the marble's motion as it leaves the ruler. Describe the marble's motion in your INB.
6. Create a mini-investigation (3 experimental groups, 3 trials)to test how the speed of the marble affects the distance the marble lands from the end of the ruler Make sure to always release the marble from the 30cm mark and always measure from the end of the ruler to find the distance. Record you data (in metric) in your INB.
