Bağışık yanıt olaylarının keşfedildiği zamandan beri enfeksiyon hastalıklarında etkene karşı oluşan özgül antikorları ortaya çıkaran serolojik testler, teşhis amacıyla kullanılmaya başlanmıştır.

Bu nedenle serolojik deney sözcüğü yetersiz kalmakta, immünolojik deney terimi daha uygun olmaktadır.
Antijen ve antikorun özgül olarak birleşmesi esasına dayanan bu testler mikrobiyolojide iki amaçla kullanılırlar:
Hastalık etkeni, mikroplara ait bildiğimiz antijenleri kullanarak hastaların serum, BOS ve diğer vücut sıvılarında özgül antikorlar aranmasıdır. Serolojik testler diye bildiğimiz deneyler bu grupta yer alır (Antikor arama).
Daha önceden araştırma laboratuvarlarında hazırlanmış, bilinen antikorlar (antiserumlar) kullanarak çeşitli ortamlarda mikroorganizma antijenlerinin aranamasına, tanımlanmasına yönelik deneylerdir (Antijen arama).
