In February 1862, Ulysses S. Grant captured two confederate river forts using ironclad gunboats (Henry and Donelson) and opened a water highway for the Union leading straight into the south. After hearing about this, Albert S. Johnston called to retreat his troops to Corinth, Mississippi.

Pittsburg Landing, near Nashville River
After Grant captured the river forts, Johnston ordered a retreat to Corinth, Mississippi, and Grant followed him. By the time Grant and his troops reached Pittsburg Landing to await troops from Nashville, it was April. Johnston then decided to attack before the troops arrived. On April 6, 1862, 45,000 troops under orders of General Johnston attacked the 65,000 Union soldiers, coming from the woods. Completely unprepared Unions were immediately overpowered. The Confederates began to push back the Union, so they then made a battle line in an old road known as the ‘Hornets Nest’ and the Rebels could not advance any further. But the tables turned when Confederates surrounded the Union, shooting anything they could hit. During this attack, Gen Johnston was killed, and his second in command, P. G. T. Beauregard took over completely. Then, during the night, Union troops from Nashville arrived. Beauregard, not knowing this, attacked the Union again and was shocked to discover more soldiers than he had expected, and Grant then ordered a counterattack, and overtook the Rebels. Beauregard had begun to realise that they would not win, and had too many casualties so the Confederates retired, losing the battle.
