Planetarium adalah gedung teater untuk memperagakan simulasi susunan bintang dan benda-benda langit. Atap gedung biasanya berbentuk kubah setengah lingkaran. Di planetarium, penonton bisa belajar mengenai pergerakan benda-benda langit di malam hari dari berbagai tempat di bumi dan sejarah alam semesta. Planetarium berbeda dari observatorium. Kubah planetarium tidak bisa dibuka untuk meneropong bintang.
Contohnya di bosscha bandung, Indonesia merupakan observatorium, sedangkan yang di gambar ini adalah planetarium.
Di dalam ruang pertunjukan terdapat sumber gambar berupa proyektor planetarium yang umumnya diletakkan di tengah ruangan. Proyektor dapat memperagakan pergerakan benda-benda langit sesuai dengan waktu dan lokasi.
Pertunjukan berlangsung dengan narasi yang diiringi musik. Kursi memiliki sandaran bisa direbahkan agar penonton bisa melihat ke layar di bagian dalam langit-langit kubah. Layar berbentuk setengah bola, dan biasanya disusun dari panel aluminum. Materi pertunjukan bisa berbeda-beda bergantung kepada judul pertunjukan dan jadwal.
