Now, I’m gonna present you some useful things for enhance our vision to the life. It’s about Stoicism. Anybody have heard this before ? Great. OK. Let’s start then.
*
First of all, Stoicism is known as ‘Granddaddy of Modern Psychotherapy’ very important expression right ?
Let’s look what is it ?
* Slayttakiler okunur
Stoicism is an ancient Greek philosophy.
It was founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BC, but was famously improved by the likes of Epictetus, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius.
The philosophy teaches the development of self-control and happiness as a means of overcoming destructive emotions.
* In this philosphy they claim by just thoughts you can overcome every difficulties in your life and steadily maintain a happy mood. One of the Stoic philospher and Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelis in his book he wrote

* So, let’s look at their methods, how they can do it ?
*First okunur
First: “People are not disturbed by events, they disturbed by their judgments about events.” Events are neither good nor bad; your interpretation of them is good or bad.
*marcusu okunur
If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to change at any moment.
What they want to say ? let’s give an example: rain makes some people sad. Actually rain doesn’t. Your beliefs your notion about rain makes you sad. You can apply this method to every subject. End up you will see it is true.
OK. Let’s go back vital principles
* Secondu okudun
Second: “It’s critical to know what you can control and what you can’t.” And for the Stoics, the only thing you ever really have control over is your deliberate thoughts. You can’t control other people, you can’t control nature, and you can’t always control your own body.
/When you get frustrated because of something you cannot control, that mean you’re pretending you’re God. You feel you should have power over something you don’t and that’s why you get angry or sad.
* epictetus u okudun
Yeah, maybe your best friend shouldn’t have done this to you, but he did. Maybe it shouldn’t be raining, but it is. You don’t have control over it. However, you can say, but I can affect my friend for not to do it again. Yes you can. But that’s not mean you have 100% control over. Unfortunately he can do it again. So, never be sad because of something you can not control. That was the second vital principle.
* I chose this template deliberately. This mountain and gap represent diffuculties, obstacles which are we confront with in our lives.
Ok. Now, let’s see what our attitude must be before we confront with obstacles.
*slayttakiler okunur
By exposing yourself to small doses of stress in a controlled way, sometimes in imagination, you can build up stronger defences and become less vulnerable when confronted with a real-life problem.
Feel the negatives before you really feel the negatives, turns down the volume on those emotions when it counts. And that allows you to weather the storm.
*marcus okunur
Looks like little pessimistic. Right ? but actually it isn’t. Buying life insurance doesn’t mean you want to die. It means you realistically recognize it can happen and you want to be prepared. And if you spend some time thinking about the downside, experiencing those bad feelings in advance ends up with a realizing it’s not the end of the world.
Your first day on the job, something went wrong and you became very sad. A few weeks later, the same thing happened and you didn’t even blink. You got used to it. So taking the time to think through the worst that could happen, to feel the negatives before you really feel the negatives, turns down the volume.
*
* yeaah, difficult events. In your relationships, between you and your family, with your friends, about school , anything. You came across. How you can overcome ? we will see now.
* slayt okunur
When things make you exhausted and you want to give up, the Stoics knew that what you needed was perspective.
The world is a big place. Your life is long. But when you feel like you screwed up, you forget this and your small obstacle is all you can think about.
So take a step back. Look at the big picture. Stoics like to take the “view from above.”
You’re getting caught in your interpretations of the events, and you’re probably mistaken about what was under your control. Your problems are small. your current problem is so small in the grand scheme of your life.
*
Think. Yes, you screwed up. But you’ve screwed up before — many times — and it felt like the end of the world then, too. It wasn’t. You know what ? This is a focusing illusion.
*söz okunur
This is just about focusing. Your focus is on your current problem only. As you see, in the grand scheme of your life you have seen diffuculties even bigger ones than before in your life. See, big picture and realize it’s not the end of the world.
* Slayt okunur
When you find yourself lacking strength, the Stoics felt you needed a role model. Someone to look up to, and someone to be inspired by. Thinking about that person can give you guidance.
This isn’t just a method from 2000 years ago...
Brian Wansink, specialist on food psychology, at Cornell University. Before kids ate a meal, he asked them to think, “What would Batman eat?” That one question made them much more likely to pick apple slices over french fries for lunch. What about with adults? Same principle held true.
Your heroes are strong. And they can make you strong too if you think about them when times are tough.
Who are this heroes. It can be anyone. Your father, your friend your brother a character from a novel, a hero from a history. Who you want to be. When times are thoug. Think, what he or she would do in my situation in my position. You will get the true answer.
*Slayttakiler okunur.
Consider what is under your control ?
Not events, your interpretations about events make you sad.
Think, what could be worst ?
And be ready for that.
Take a step back and look at big picture.
Ask yourself, in my position, what would my role model do ?
In brief, this ancient philosophy – Stoicism –provides a lot of useful strategies for make our lives better. You can gain a new attitude towards difficulties you confront and under favour of this smart thoughts you can mentally handle almost every complexity in your life.
Finally, I have one more quotation for you, from Seneca:
