Rune Kuno adalah suatu studi mengenai
huruf- huruf atau simbol- simbol rune . Rune
sendiri adalah alfabet Jerman kuno (yang
bagi beberapa orang mirip tulisan paku) yang
digunakan di Eropa Utara, Skandinavia ,
Kepulauan Britania, serta Islandia sejak tahun
100 B .C .E . hingga 1600 C .E .
Karena itu, selain untuk menulis , rune juga
digunakan dalam sihir dan ramalan . Kata
ramalan ( divination) sesungguhnya tidak tepat,
sebab apa yang disebut dengan
runecasting itu tidaklah benar -benar
memperlihatkan pada kita masa depan
sesungguhnya, melainkan hanya memberi
gambaran dan petunjuk ( oracle , red. ).
Adapun tiga jenis alfabet rune yang paling
dikenal oleh dunia
modern adalah Elder Futhark atau Old
Germanic Rune yang memiliki 24 rune dan
merupakan rune tertua , Younger Futhark
yang memiliki lebih sedikit rune dan
umumnya digunakan di Skandinavia , serta
Anglo -Saxon Futhorc yang merupakan
pengembangan dari alfabet rune sebelumnya.
