Dark tide

tv show

Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" is a classic not only from horror cinema, but also from the New Hollywood movement. The fairy tale of the beast who hides under the surface of the sea and rushes out with ice-cold cunning and sheer lust for murder Tearing careless bathers to the cold grave not only conjured up numerous B-movie offshoots from "Orca, the Killer Whale" to "Piranhas", but also took away the desire for a beach holiday from an entire nation - even today, 37 years after the first Once John Williams' ingenious subliminal main theme sounded, Spielberg's premise still seems attractive enough to serve as a template for deep sea thrillers of very different quality. After the plan for the inexpensive "Open Water" a few years ago, wonderful rose, Oscar winner Halle Berry now dares to get into the cool water and get up close and personal with the "great white". John really wants to be Stockwell's "Dark Tide", however, does not provide any horror - the main actress Berry, of all people, seems so absent that one looks in vain for reasons to cheer up until the end.

Kate Mathieson (Halle Berry) is a documentary filmmaker - and for this she dives with great white sharks. One unpleasant day, her mentor, Tommy (Mark Elderkin), is killed by the unpredictable beasts. A year later, the traumatized Kate never set foot in the water. While visiting her old turf in Cape Town, South Africa, the financially stricken woman, together with fellow divers and ex-boyfriend Jeff (Olivier Martinez), against their better judgment, accepts an assignment from the wealthy creep Brady (Ralph Brown): The two of them should get him and his grumpy son Accompany Luke (Luke Tyler) on a dive trip to the shark area. The amateurs are supposed to stay in the cage, but Kate has an uneasy feeling from the start. What can go wrong then actually goes wrong quickly. When a mighty storm approaches, the catastrophe threatens - and the sharks are already waiting ...

"Dark Tide" seems like a potpourri of diverse successful thrillers: The initial situation and the motivation of the protagonist Kate could have been taken from Renny Harlin's "Cliffhanger", only that the location was simply moved from lofty heights to the sea. In "Dark Tide", like the climber Sylvester Stallone, the heroine first has to practice grief after a tragedy before an unexpected event and an old friend call her back into her element - where catharsis can eventually occur. Later also send greetings from Wolfgang Petersen's "The Storm" and Luc Besson's "In Rush of the Deep" and we are involuntarily reminded of much more gripping films.

The fact that the numerous influences do not come together to form a coherent whole is not even to be blamed for director Stockwell himself - the shark thriller is always solidly staged. Stockwell shows his strengths especially in the final act with his atmospheric underwater shots. A threatening soundtrack made of two-dimensional soundscapes supports the images in an atmospheric way and the shark attacks look strong - without any CGI excesses. The storm in the final act is also well implemented - here a feeling for the brute elemental force of such a natural spectacle, which humans have nothing to counter, is actually conveyed.

Nevertheless, the film suffers from a major problem: "Dark Tide" seems like a star vehicle, in which the star does not fit the project. Oscar-winner Halle Berry ("Monster's Ball") rarely looked so bored at work . Her Kate seems strangely disinterested; The fact that she cares about the wellbeing of her fellow human beings is hardly bought from her. She even seems to put up with the death of her mentor quite well, even if her text says otherwise. The secondary characters are written in a catchy way and played with motivation. With such an unapproachable protagonist, it is still difficult to really take part in the wild events. And how well would "Jaws" have worked, had it not been for three robust figures like Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss on board?

Conclusion: "Dark Tide" is a best of modern thriller motifs, which is so unfavorably built around a strangely cool Halle Berry that the directorial qualities of the film are simply not enough for a satisfying horror experience.
