It has been several decades since in 1937 seven hard-working dwarfs gave shelter to a princess with snow-white skin and ebony hair while fleeing from her vain stepmother. But even if the classic, hand-drawn pictures from back then can hardly be compared with today's 3D computer technology, since "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" less has happened in the animation genre than one might assume, because also Disney's 50th animation film, which perked up Fairy tale adaptation "Rapunzel - Newly spoiled" by "Bolt - A dog for all cases" directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, still inspires with the tried and tested Disney qualities: With the heart in the right place, catchy catchy songs eightfold Oscar winner Alan Menken ("Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin") and a whole bunch of unforgettable characters - from the title character flapping around with a frying pan to the hilarious chameleon sidekick Pascal - continues the anniversary film Disney's upswing, the after a long dry spell (just remember at best average animation products like "Atlantis - The Secret of the Lost City", "The Treasure Planet" or "Wild Animal") began last year with "Kiss the Frog".
Because of her magical hair, which gives eternal youth to anyone who rubs it, Rapunzel (in the original: Mandy Moore; in the German version: Alexandra Neldel) was kidnapped by the evil mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) as a baby and into one locked remote tower. Rapunzel, who Gothel thinks is her real mother and can no longer remember that she herself is the real princess of the kingdom, is now 18 years old and her flowing blonde hair has reached a proud length of more than 20 meters. Her greatest wish is to explore the world out there for once. The chance to do so climbs through the window in the form of the thief Flynn Rider (Zachary Levy; Moritz Bleibtreu) fleeing from the king's guards. Rapunzel made him promise to lead her across the country, in return he would receive a valuable diadem. On their adventurous journey, the charming crook and the inexperienced princess inevitably get closer. But mother Gothel is already hot on the heels of the two lovebirds ...
The makers had already been in production for six months when they found out that they were working on Disney's anniversary film. That is why it is primarily due to chance that "Rapunzel - New Feels" now actually looks like a celebration of more than 70 years of Disney cinema. And that is not only due to the scene in which thousands of lit lanterns in front of the Disney-typical fairytale castle in ascending the night sky, the film sometimes feels like a best-of of the great Disney classics. All the necessary ingredients are there: just like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "Rapunzel - New Spoiled" is now based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, which author Dan Fogelman ("Cars") pimped up again (a film that only takes place in a tower would have run out of air quickly). In addition, Rapunzel is a particularly quick-witted representative of her guild, who also likes to send her male contemporaries into the realm of dreams with a frying pan, seamlessly into the history of strong Disney princesses from Snow White to Ariel ("Ariel, the mermaid") and Belle ( "Beauty and the Beast") to Tiana ("Kiss the Frog").
The absolute showpiece of "Rapunzel - New Confused" remains the two animal sidekicks, although neither of them speaks a word. With their silent slapstick interludes, even Grandmaster Charlie Chaplin couldn't have done much better in terms of timing. Which of the two Since the chameleon Pascal, who often gets confused with the colors, or the horse Maximus, who thinks himself a police dog, is more convincing, you really don't want to have to decide. The fact that the 3D animations are technically the finest is actually a production in this price range Hardly worth mentioning anymore. Much more important is that, in contrast to "Bolt", which is trimmed in a modern way, the Disney animators managed to save the unmistakable charm of classic cartoons into the third dimension for the first time. The only downer is that Walt Disney's golden rule that there should be a tear for every laugh only applies to a limited extent this time. In contrast to the sometimes sad "Kiss the Frog" (when the glowworm Ray died, who was in love with a star, hardly an eye stayed dry in the cinemas around the world), the focus of "Rapunzel - New Spoiled Up" is clearly on the humorous moments.
