Concrete is a relatively new material consisting of coarse and fine aggregate bonded together by a liquid cement. In its purest form concrete is an aggregate comprised of fine particles of rock and soil primarily composed of Portland cement. Over time different types of materials and additives are added to enhance the properties of the concrete, making it stronger and more durable. Among these add-ons are Portland cement, which is the main ingredient in concrete. While concrete can be made from natural stone or pre-fabricated concrete mixes, pre-made concrete is more convenient and faster to produce.


Concrete is formed by combining fine aggregate pieces with liquid cement that is applied through a nozzle. The cement hardens into a mass, after which it is slowly added to the aggregate base through a series of hinged, sliding rods calledaggels. The concrete may also be straightened using techniques such as hydroforming or press pot. A concrete slab's basic structure is composed of Portland cement, sand, and coarse gravel.


A Portland cement mixture is prepared by combining cement, water, and limestone in the ratio of one: three. When this mixture is exposed to high temperatures for about 300 minutes, it becomes hard enough to form concrete. When the paste cools, it returns to its solid state, which can be carved, drilled, and sawed. The grinding of the concrete requires an electric blade to grind away at the aggregate. After grinding, the paste can now be further processed into forms such as decorative concrete and flooring.


There are many different types of concrete surface treatments to choose from. Most Portland cement products come in tiles, slabs, pavers, stamps, and aggregates. A good tip when choosing the right type of treatment is to consider the traffic patterns on the driveway and on the house itself. For example, if the house has a lot of traffic through the garage, then the use of a sealer that will protect the cement from getting scuffed up should be considered. On the other hand, if the garage is used only occasionally, then a simple sealer would do the trick.


There are many different types of finishes that can be applied to concrete. Two of the most commonly used finishes are paint and stain. Paint comes in several different grades to choose from depending on the existing color of the concrete. Stained concrete stains are most commonly used for patios and driveways.


Concrete nouns or concrete derivatives can also be referred to as parts, components, and constructions. However, unlike other words that end in -ize, concrete nouns do not end in -ly, -ate, or -ize. This makes concrete nouns much more descriptive and helps people understand the project much better. For instance, instead of saying I built this house with my own hands, I can say I'm using concrete nomenclatures because the concrete literally "built" the house.
