SariAgri - Kima (Tridacna Sp) atau giant clam merupakan kerang laut berukuran raksasa yang banyak ditemukan di laut Indonesia. Bagaimana tidak, kerang yang kerap dijadikan konsumsi bagi masyarakat luar ini bisa mencapai panjang 2 meter dengan bobot 250 gram.
Di Indonesia sendiri, kima termasuk ke dalam biota laut yang dilindungi karena dianggap sebagai pahlawan lautan. Hal tersebut tertuang dalam Peraturan Pemerintah No. 7 tahun 1999 tentang Pengawetan Tumbuhan dan Satwa Liar dan telah direvisi sesuai Surat Keputusan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan no. 92 tahun 2018 tentang Jenis Tumbuhan dan Satwa yang Dilindungi.
Lantas mengapa kima disebut sebagai penyelamat lautan? Menurut akun Instagram Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan (KKP) kima berperan untuk menjaga lingkungan perairan Indonesia agar tetap sehat.
Kima berperan penting dalam membersihkan mikroorganisme yang berlebihan, sehingga air laut menjadi lebih sehat. Setiap ekor kima mampu membersihkan berton-ton air laut setiap hari.

Kemudian, kima berfungsi sebagai biofilter alami, mengapa demikian karena kima mampu menyaring nutrien terlarut. Selain itu, kima juga menyerap berbagai zat berbahaya bagi laut seperti zat nitrogen dan fosfat.
Lebih lanjut kima bisa menjadi alat pendeteksi keadaan air laut, sebagai contoh jika kerang raksasa ini memiliki warna yang pucat hal tersebut menandakan bahwa laut sedang mengalami kenaikan suhu dan tercemar polusi.
Dari sepuluh spesies yang ada di dunia, Indonesia memiliki tujuh jenis Kima yang mendiami perairan diantaranya kima raksasa (Tridacna gigas), kima air atau kima selatan (T. Derasa), kima sisik (T. Squamosa), kima kecil (T. Maxima), Kima lubang (T. Cocea), kima pasir (Hippopus hippopus), kima porselen (Hippopus parcellanus).
Ketujuh jenis kima tersebut tersebar di berbagai wilayah perairan Indonesia, adapun sebarannya meliputi Selat Bali, Selat Makassar, Laut Sulawesi (kima selatan), Pantai Barat Tapanuli (kima raksasa), Perairan Indonesia Timur (kima porselen).
