Advantages of the Big Wheel
A big wheel refers to a type or style of bicycle made mostly of plastic, with a smaller front than other styles. These unique bicycles were introduced by Louis Marx and Company in 1969 and made in Girard, Pennsylvania. They were originally called the "municipal bicycle". They could be used in place of regular bicycles on busy streets. They had a boxy design to contrast with the modern-day big wheels.

The "municipal bicycle" was designed with two wheels on either side of the central wheel. This gave riders the freedom to ride in either direction at the same time. Two wheels on each side allowed the rider to stay in place without coasting or changing directions mid-way. These bikes were also great for getting around smaller cities. These bicycles also had small drop bars under the seat, instead of a top bar. This made it easier for the rider to change direction without having to stop abruptly.

Since its inception, the "municipal” style of bicycle has been greatly modified. Today's large wheels are much bigger and have their very own brake mechanism. Due to the larger wheels, it can be hard to turn the bike on a straight path.
