The philiphine archipelago is surrounded by oceans, seas, lakes, and other bodies of water .Many provinces border on thea sea and many municipalietis are coastal. The Philippines has a total coastline of about 17,000 kilometers. From these surrounding bodies of fresh water and sea waters comes a bountiful suplly of important marine products. The countries has one of the richest fishing grounds in the world. Fishing resources include rivers, ponds, lakes, swamp lands, coastal or inshore water resources, and the deep sea. Fishimg in these rich fishimg grounds is a major livelihood activity in a big part of the country. In some coastal areas near urban centers where demand for food is higher, mussles (tahong) and oysters or talaba are grown and cultured by fisherfolks. These livelihood undertaking is quite popular in thea coastal towns of Cavite, Quezon, Bataan , Pangasinan and Bulacan.
