How to Create a Green Wall With Succulents
Over the years, our nursery has become linked to many interesting projects that make use of the diverse characteristics of succulents. One with the most intriguing was the preparation of some green walls to get a flower show in San Francisco. The designer wanted some large panels with geometric shapes, along with a smaller "picture" to hang with them. When it was completed, we felt this project was highly successful, and we all desired to share our process for creating green walls.
The first challenge was to make the support structure that could keep your plants set up, and permit for care. faux timber panels chosen a plywood back, using a wood edge, after which horizontal metal flashing for "shelves" every 12 inches to support the soil. The shelves were attached to the plywood backing with short screws. Drip tubes were placed across the bottom of every shelf then when the panel was placed upright, the tubes will be across the top of each "layer of soil. With proper emitter spacing, each soil "shelf" can be watered along its entire width.
All with the layers were stuffed with potting soil. You should use as finely textured potting soil as you can find, because the drainage can be really good as a result of effective 12" depth in the soil (the length between your "shelves".) A layer of forest moss was positioned on the surface of the potting soil then one inch chicken wire was placed throughout the whole panel retained by attaching the perimeters for the plywood edge. You will also have to wire the chicken wire either on the shelves or towards the plywood panel wires to keep the "face" from bulging out when the panel lies upright.
The panels were planted over the chicken wire and moss within the pattern specified by the designer. Succulents provide a good number of leaf shapes and color which you can use to produce a broad range of textures and design. Be sure to take into account the final size from the plants once you develop your design.
After planting, panels were grown in the horizontal position prior to the succulents were well established. When completed, these panels were some with the most stunning items we have ever had here. And they represent just a few from the unlimited possibilities for green wall panels. With a little effort and imagination, you're able to do something similar for your garden, patio or deck.
