Even though the worship of sacred remains was a part of almost every aspect of private and communal life, from politics and personal devotion to God, until recently, relics have received very little attention from historians or art historians. To obtain sacred relics, medieval monks plundered tombs, avaricious merchants raided churches, and relic-mongers scoured the Roman catacombs. In a revised edition of Furta Sacra, Patrick Geary considers the social and cultural context for these acts, asking how the relics were percieved and why the thefts met with the approval of medieval Christians. Visitors to churches who have made pilgrimage to view the relics of the saint would be permitted to touch the reliquaries and approach the tomb. Sometimes the saint's tomb would have small hand-holes carved out of the stone so that worshippers could put their hand inside to touch the remains.
