The material is not made from a polymer, which makes it non-woven. The main purpose of the fiber-reinforced mat is to prevent the exposed glass filaments from showing through the gelcoat. It is commonly available in large carpet-like rolls. The fibers of the mat are water-proof and pliable, making it a versatile material. It comes in various thicknesses, from 3/4 oz to two oz.
The fiberglass mat comes in a variety of widths and is sold by the yard. The fiber-reinforced plastic body of the Corvette was the first vehicle made of fiberglass. Unlike the molded body of the car, the underlying fabric is made from chopped strands. In order to protect the glass filaments during the lay-up process, this material is made using a special binder that is intended for use with polyester or vinylester resins.
While fiberglass mat and fiberglass cloth are similar, it is important to wear protective gear when working with them. If you have exposed skin or are working with them in a confined space, you should wear a respirator. The fibers are abrasive and can cause irritation and rashes. The resin used to bond the cloth and the mat together is also dangerous to breathe. It is best to keep yourself away from a working environment where people are working around the fiberglass.
