You want to socket your armor with the best trinkets that you have access to. When you are level 40, you will be able to get the biggest armor item, but until then, you should use the best thieves loots to socket your armor with.

If you are getting a blacksmith to upgrade your armor, then you should use the item that you socket in your blacksmith to make tanking items. You can also get other armor items from the monsters that you kill faster.

Remember, the key here is to level up to 40 with your character before starting to do quests that give experience for your kills. Then, you can easily upgrade your armor and weapons at 40.
