Vaping Facts You Need to Know
You may be tempted to go to vaping with electronic devices (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other nondisposable in-situ vaping tools) as a method to simplify the transition from traditional cigarettes to smoking no cigarettes at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also known as vaping) healthier than smoking tobacco? Could e-cigarettes assist you in get rid of smoking cigarettes once and all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease and shares information about health benefits of vaping.

1 Vaping is not as harmful than smoking, but it's still not safe.

E-cigarettes warm nicotine (extracted from tobacco) along with flavorings and other chemicals to create an aerosol that you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, a majority of which are toxic. While we don't know exactly the ingredients in e cigarette, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

However, there has been a surge of lung injuries and death that is associated vaping. In February of 2020 officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified 2,807 cases of e-cigarette or vaping-related airway injury (EVALI) and at least 68 deaths related to this disease.

"These cases seem to touch those who alter their vaping equipment or use illicitly modified e-liquids. This is especially true of vaping products that contain THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E Acetate as a chemical that should be considered a risk for people who suffer from EVALI. Vitamin E acetate is a thickening agent often employed in THC vaping products, and it was discovered in the lung fluid samples of patients suffering from EVALI analyzed by the CDC.

The CDC suggests that people

Do not use THC-containing e-cigarettes and vaping devices.

Avoid informal sources including family members, friends or online merchants to purchase smoking devices.

Do not modify or add any substance to a vaping device , which is not permitted by the manufacturer.

A study conducted by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 has revealed thousands of chemical ingredients in vape brands many of which are not yet identified. What the researchers were able to recognize were various potentially harmful substances, including caffeine, three chemicals that have never been previously identified in electronic cigarettes such as pesticides, as well as two flavors that could cause toxic effects and respiratory irritation.

2. Research suggests vaping can be detrimental to your heart and lungs.

Nicotine is the most prominent ingredient in regular cigarettes and e cigarettes, and it's extremely addictive. It causes you to crave smoking cigarettes and to experience withdrawal symptoms if one does not take care to ignore the desire. Nicotine is an extremely toxic drug. It elevates blood pressure and increases your adrenaline, which raises the rate of your heart and increases the likelihood of having a heart attack.

Do you think that vaping is bad for you? There are many unanswered questions about vaping, such as the chemicals that create the vapor and how they affect physical well-being over the long-term. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," says Blaha. "Emerging data suggest links to lung diseases that are chronic and asthma, as well as connections between the use of tobacco and smoking with cardiovascular disease. You're exposed to a variety of chemicals which we're still not sure about and which are most likely not risk-free."

Electronic cigarettes are identical to conventional cigarettes.

Both cigarettes, e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes contain nicotine, which studies suggest that they are as addictive as cocaine and heroin. But, as per Blaha, many e-cigarette users will get more nicotine that they would get from a combustible tobacco product. You can buy cartridges with an extra strength that are higher in nicotine, or boost the e-cigarette's voltage for more nicotine substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't the greatest smoking methods for quitting.

While they've been marketed as a way to aid users quit smoking, they haven't been granted Food and Drug Administration approval to be used as a method of quitting smoking. Recent research has revealed many people who wanted to switch to e-cigarettes for the purpose of kicking the habit of smoking nicotine ended up continuing to smoke traditional and e-cigarettes.

Based on the EVALI outbreak, the CDC suggests people who utilize electronic cigarettes to stop smoking to evaluate the potential risks and benefits and before making a decision, consider other smoking cessation alternatives approved by the FDA.

5 A new generation is getting addicted to nicotine.

When it comes to youth, e-cigarettes especially the disposable type tend to be more beloved than any typical tobacco brand. Based on the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high teens reported using electronic cigarettes in 2021, with more than 8 percent of those adolescents using flavored cigarettes.

According to Blaha there are three reasons that e-cigarettes might be popular with young people. The first is that many teenagers believe vaping isn't as harmful as smoking. Also, e-cigarettes carry a lower cost per-use than traditional cigarettes. Additionally, adults and teens are able to find the absence of smoke appealing. Since they don't smell, e-cigarettes help to reduce the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha claims. Blaha. "It's one thing to convert from cigarette smoking to vaping. It's another to start your nicotine addiction with vaping. Then, the addiction to nicotine often leads to using traditional tobacco products in the future."

Research conducted by the CDC finds that smoking cigarettes among youth has declined somewhat since the year 2020. Children being at home under their parents' supervision during the COVID-19 pandemic could cause this trend.

Young people change their preferences frequently, and, if surveyed, may not consider buying disposable products like "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report says disposable e-cigarette use has increased by 1,000 percent among high school students and 400 percent among middle school students in the past year.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

The coronavirus outbreak first was discovered, Blaha says, data show that the sales of electronic cigarettes dropped most likely because people were staying at home at night and avoiding stores and public areas.

However, Blaha observes a pattern that makes him nervous: the increase that people use e-cigarettes daily among everyone vape user. "The percentage of users using vape regularly was 1 in five, but these days it's increasing quite a bit, and that's worrying since it could mean more addiction to nicotine. I'm keeping an eye on that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping products can vary in form, size, and color. Devices produce an aerosol byproduct due to the process of heating liquid which is sometimes made up of flavorings and other chemical compounds that help make vaping less harsh (initially at the very least) more than smoking. The liquid supplies nicotine, marijuana, and other drugs to the user via a mouthpiece . The liquid is breathed to the lungs. Then it is expelled via the mouth or the nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

Though many of these brands typically have a liquid comprising only one third to half the amount of nicotine found in the cigarettes. For example, a JUULpod at 5% strength is created to be a replacement for a pack of cigarettes with nicotine strength. Vaping users nonetheless face some health-related and safety concerns.

Nicotine is a stimulant that could be harmful to the adolescent's developing brain (which continues to expand until about 25 years of age) is present in numerous e-cigarettes but not always listed on the packaging, according to a recent CDC study.

The consumption of nicotine in the developing adolescent brains can be harmful to the parts that control:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Impulse control

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. The habitual use in adolescence may raise the risk of an addiction to cigarettes in the future and other drugs.

In addition to nicotine in vaping, vaping liquids and their subsequent inhalation could contain other dangerous compounds, including

Cancer-causing chemicals

Metals that are heavy, like lead, nickel and tin

Flavorings that include diacetyl are a chemical linked to lung disease

Volatile organic compounds

Ultra-fine particles, which are able to be breathed deep into the lungs.

Scientists are still actively discovering the consequences from vaping, mainly around Vitamin E Acetate, which is one of the chemicals that are added to many vaping liquids to assist in diluting. More than 2,500 cases were reported of people being hospitalized because of vaping injuries as of December 17 2019. Vaping has also been responsible for 54 deaths in 27 states and within the District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) information, 3.6 million children in middle school and high school use electronic cigarettes. Use, defined by at least one per day for the last 30 days, is up around 78 percent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in the year 2018.

The increased use of e-cigarettes among middle school and high school students has resulted in an increase in tobacco smoking by 38 percent for high school students, and 29 percent among middle students in middle school.

The use of electronic cigarettes doesn't limit teens. Nine percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

E-cigarettes aren't suitable for adolescents, young adults, along with pregnant females, and adults who currently do not make use of tobacco products.

While electronic cigarettes have the potential to benefit some people and make others sick, scientists need to know more about whether e-cigarettes work in helping people quit smoking.

If you've never smoked or utilized other tobacco products, or electronic cigarettes, do not start.
