Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) is the process of transmitting television programming via Internet Protocol (IP). This differs from broadcasting via traditional satellite, terrestrial and cable television models. Instead of downloading the media, IPTV offers the ability to stream source media continually. A client media player is able to play the source media content, for example TV channelsalmost immediately. This is referred to as streaming media.

While IPTV employs the Internet protocol it is not only restricted to broadcasting television by on the Internet (Internet television). IPTV can be found in subscriber-based telecommunications networks with high-speed access channels to end-user premises via set-top boxes or any other devices for customer premises. IPTV can also be used to provide media delivery around private and corporate networks. The process of standardizing IPTV in the telecoms sector (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is the highlight.

IPTV service can be classed as live television and live media with or without related interactivity; the shifting of time for media, e.g., catch-up TV (replays a TV show that has been broadcast just hours or days ago) as well as start-over TV (replays the current TV show beginning from when it was broadcast) along with the video-on-demand (VOD) which involves browsing and viewing items of the catalogue of media.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The International Telecommunication Union's focus panel IPTV on IPTV has approved the following official definition:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

A different definition of IPTV in relation to the industry of telecoms is the one given by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV can be defined as the safe and secure distribution to viewers of entertainment videos and other related services. This can include Live TV, Video On Demand, and Interactive TV (iTV). They are offered on an access agnostic, IPTV-based network, which employs the IP protocol to transmit the audio, video as well as control signals. IPTV deployments are safer as compared to video streaming on the Internet. They also deliver superior performance and security.
