Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) is the process of transmitting TV content using Internet Protocol (IP). It is different from the traditional terrestrial, satellite, and cable television format. IPTV permits you to stream your source media constantly and is not a substitute for downloading the media. In turn, a client media player can start playing content (such as TV channels) quickly. This is called streaming media.

IPTV is an Internet-connected television service that operates on an Internet protocol. IPTV can be found on a wide range of subscriber-based telecommunications systems which offer high-speed channels for the end-users via set top boxes and other technology. IPTV is also utilized for streaming media across private and business networks. IPTV in the field of telecoms is well-known due to its ongoing normalisation process (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute).

The IPTV service can be classified as live television and/or live media with or without interactivity.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The focus panel IPTV on IPTV adopted this definition as official:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

Another definition of IPTV with respect to the telecom industry is the one given by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV is the term used to describe the secure and reliable delivery of entertainment content and related services for subscribers. These services may include such things as Live TV, Video On Demand (VOD) as well as Interactive TV (iTV). These are services that are available on an access-agnostic and wireless network using the IP protocol for transporting the video, audio and control signals. IPTV deployments are more secure than videos on the Internet. They also deliver top performance and security.
