Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) is the process of transmitting television content via Internet Protocol (IP). This is distinct from traditional satellite and terrestrial television delivery. In contrast to downloaded media, IPTV provides the capability to stream content continually. This means that the client media player will play the media (such as a TV channel) quickly. This is known as streaming media.
IPTV is an Internet-based television service that operates on the Internet protocol. IPTV can be seen within a variety of subscriber-based telecoms networks that offer high-speed TV channels to the end-users via set top boxes as well as other devices. IPTV is also employed for media delivery around corporate and private networks. IPTV within the realm of telecommunications is notable for its ongoing standardisation process (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute).
They can be categorize as live TV or live media that has interactivity or not.
Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. A definition officially which has been accepted by the International Telecommunication Union focus group on IPTV (ITU-T FG IPTV) is:
IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]
A different definition of IPTV, relating to the telecom industry is the one provided by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:
IPTV refers to safe and secure delivery of entertainment video and other related services for subscribers. This can include Live TV, Video On Demand as well as Interactive TV (iTV). They can be provided over an internet-agnostic packet switched network that uses the IP protocol to deliver audio, video as well as control signals. IPTV deployments are more secure than videos on the Internet. They also deliver high performance and security.
