The ring was first placed in the cathedral of Perugia. It has since been moved from one cathedral to another and is now officially owned by the city of Perugia. The jewel was originally kept in a Decemviri chapel at the Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia. After this, a goldsmith from Chiusi, Italy, named Ainerio received it as a gift from a Jewish merchant of precious stones. The goldsmith buried it in the family crypt and forgot about it until his son died. His son rebuked him from the grave for abandoning the relic. The goldsmith gave the ring to the convent of St. Mustiola.
The ring was eventually moved to Perugia and is now on display in the Cathedral of Perugia. The Virgin Mary's wedding ring is a quartz jewel whose miracles have been documented. It must be opened by 14 different keys before the ring can be displayed. The ring is considered an important part of the Marian shrine and is considered a valuable relic. The relic was donated to the city by an anonymous goldsmith from Chiusi, Italy, who found it in his family crypt.
