Vaping Facts You Need to Know
You may be tempted to opt for vaping with electronic devices (e-cigarettes, vape pens, as well as other non-disposable (and disposable) vaping products) as a way to facilitate the transition from traditional cigarettes to the absence of smoking. But , is smoking electronic cigarettes (also called vaping) better than smoking tobacco? Can vaping help you quit smoking cigarettes once and for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease is a health expert who shares his knowledge about vaping.

1 It is safer to vape than smoking, but vaping isn't safe.

E-cigarettes are a method of heating nicotine (extracted from tobacco) or flavorings along with other chemicals to make an aerosol that you inhale. Regular cigarettes are made up of 7000 chemicals, some of which are harmful. While we don't know exactly which chemicals are in electronic cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

However, there has been a surge of lung-related injuries and deaths with vaping. In February of 2020, there was a report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 28007 cases of ecigarettes or vaping-related Lung injury (EVALI) and 68 deaths attributed to that disease.

"These cases are believed to concern people who alter their devices for vaping or who use black market modified e-liquids. This is particularly true for vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E Acetate as a chemical which is of concern for patients suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E Acetate is a thickening agent that is commonly used in THC vape products. it was found in the lung fluid samples of EVALI patients studied for the CDC.

The CDC recommends that individuals:

Don't use e-cigarettes that contain THC as well as vaping items.

Avoid using informal sources like relatives, friends or online dealers to obtain a vaping device.

Do not modify or add any substance into a device that are not designed by the manufacturer.

A study conducted by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients released in October 2021, reveals a myriad of chemical ingredients used in vape and other products most of which remain unidentified. Among those the team could discover were some potentially harmful chemicals, including caffeine. three substances that were never before discovered in electronic cigarettes such as pesticides, as well as two flavorings associated with negative effects on breathing and respiratory irritation.

2. Research suggests that vaping can be detrimental to your lungs and heart.

Nicotine is the primary agent in regular cigarettes as well as e-cigarettes. it's extremely addictive. Nicotine causes one to desire an cigarette and then suffer withdrawal symptoms if you do not address the urge. Nicotine is an extremely toxic drug. It raises blood pressure. It also spikes your adrenaline, which raises your heart rate and the possibility of suffering from a heart attack.

Do you think that vaping is bad for you? There are many unanswered questions about smoking e-cigarettes, including what chemicals make up the vapor , and their effects on physical health in the long run. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," Blaha says. Blaha. "Emerging research suggests links to lung diseases and chronic asthma, and associations between dual use of smoking e-cigarettes and cardiovascular disease. You're exposing yourself to all kinds of chemicals that we're unable to fully comprehend and that are , in all likelihood, not in the best interest of your health."

Electronic cigarettes are just as addictive as traditional cigarettes.

E-cigarettes as well as regular cigarettes contain nicotine, which research suggests could be as addictive as cocaine and heroin. The worst part is, according to Blaha that e-cigarette users have more nicotine than they would with a conventional cigarettes: Users can purchase extra-strong cartridges, which are higher in nicotine, or raise the voltage of the e-cigarette, resulting in an even higher dose of the substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't the greatest smoking cessation tool.

Although they've been touted as an aid to help users quit smoking, they have not received Food and Drug Administration approval for use as smoking cessation tools. Recent research has revealed that the majority people who planned to quit smoking e-cigarettes the habit of smoking nicotine ended up staying with traditional and e-cigarettes.

Amid the EVALI outbreak, the CDC recommends those who are using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation to evaluate the potential risks and benefits and first look into other options for smoking cessation approved by the FDA.

5: A new generation is hooked on nicotine.

Among youth, e-cigarettes, particularly the disposable ones get more attention than traditional tobacco product. A report from 2021 states that National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2021. That includes eight in 10 teens using flavored e-cigarettes.

According to Blaha the three main reasons why e-cigarettes are especially appealing to teens. A first reason is that a lot of teens believe vaping isn't as harmful as smoking. Second, e-cigarettes have a cheaper cost per use than traditional cigarettes. Finally, youths and adults find the lack of smoke attractive. E-cigarettes are odorless and have the potential to diminish the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha says. Blaha. "It's the same thing when you quit smoking cigarettes and switch to vaping. It's something else to take the first steps to start nicotine use by vaping. In addition, becoming addicted to nicotine may lead to using traditional tobacco products down the road."

Research conducted by the CDC shows that the rate of vaping among adolescents has dropped somewhat since the year 2020. Children staying at home under their parents' supervision during the COVID-19 syphilis could have a role in that.

Teenagers alter their tastes frequently, and, when being surveyed, they may not consider using disposable products like "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC study states that disposable electronic cigarette usage has increased by 1000 percent among high schoolers and 400% among middle school students since 2019.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

When the coronavirus-related pandemic was discovered, Blaha claims, the data prove that e-cigarette sales fell in part due to people staying at home and avoiding stores and public areas.

But Blaha observes a pattern that makes him nervous: the increase of daily use of electronic cigarettes among any vape use. "The percentage of users smoking vape daily was previously 1 in 5, but today it's up quite a bit, which is troubling because it suggests a rise in nicotine dependence. I'm keeping an to watch that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping devices vary in shape, size , and colors. Devices produce an aerosol byproduct generated by the heating of a liquid that may contain flavors and other substances that make vaping seem less harsh (initially at least) than smoking. This liquid can deliver nicotine, marijuana, or some other substance to the user through a mouthpiece . The liquid is breathed into the lungs . This is then expelling through the mouth or nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

Many of these items typically contain a liquid that has just one-third-to-half of the nicotine present in cigarettes. As an example, one JUULpod with 5% strength was meant to replace an entire pack of cigarettes with nicotine strength--vaping users still face multiple health and safety risks.

Nicotine is a stimulant that can damage the developing adolescent brain (which will continue to grow up to about 25 years age) can be found in a lot of electronic cigarettes. However, it's usually not on the label, according to a recent CDC study.

The use to take nicotine in adolescent brains can damage the areas that regulate:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Impulse control

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. The habitual use in adolescence may raise the risk of the possibility of a future dependence on cigarettes and other drugs.

Other than nicotine Vaping liquid and vaping vapors can contain harmful substances like:

Cancer-causing chemicals

Heavy metals such as lead, nickel, and tin

Flavorings including diacetyl a chemical associated with lung disease

Volatile organic compounds

Ultra-fine particles that may be inhaled deep into the lungs

Scientists are still learning about the negative effects of vaping. This is especially the case with Vitamin E Acetate, which is which is a chemical that is added to certain vaping liquids to help dilute. There were more than 2500 cases of users being hospitalized for vaping-related injuries as of December 17 19th, 2019. Vaping was also the cause of 54 deaths in 27 states as well as within the District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) information, 3.6 million children in middle school and high schools use e-cigarettes. Use, defined by at least once per throughout the past 30 days has increased 78 percent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

The increase in e-cigarette usage by middle and high school students has led to an increase in tobacco use by 38 percent for high schoolers and 29 percent among middle students in middle school.

E-cigarettes aren't just for teens. Nine percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

E-cigarettes are a great option to be beneficial to adult smokers not pregnant , if used as completely substitutes for regular cigarettes as well as other tobacco products.

E-cigarettes pose a risk to adolescents, young adults, pregnancy women and children, or adults who currently do not take tobacco products.

While e-cigarettes could prove in helping some people, and be harmful to others, scientists have a lot to discover about whether they are effective in helping people quit smoking.

If you've not ever utilized other tobacco products, or electronic cigarettes, you shouldn't begin.

Further research could help in understanding the long-term effects on health.
