Vaping Facts You Need to Know
You may be tempted to look into electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other nondisposable (and disposable) vaping products) as a method to facilitate the transition from smoking traditional cigarettes and using no tobacco at all. But is smoking electronic cigarettes (also known as vaping) better than smoking tobacco? Can e-cigarettes be used to stop smoking once and for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease provides health information on vaping.

1 Vaping isn't more harmful than smokingcigarettes, but it's not entirely safe.

E-cigarettes warm nicotine (extracted from tobacco) flavourings, flavorings and chemicals to create an aerosol that you breathe in. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, many that are harmful. While we don't know exactly which chemicals are in electronic cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

There was a sudden increase in lung injuries and death that is associated vaping. In February 2020, experts from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified 28007 cases of vaping or vaping-related respiratory injury (EVALI) and there were 68 deaths linked to that disease.

"These cases seem to involve people who have modified their vaping devices or use illicitly modified e-liquids. This is especially true for cigarettes that contain THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E acetate as a chemical of concern in people suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E Acetate is a substance that thickens the vapor used in THC vape products. it was found in all samples of lung fluid of patients with EVALI studied by the CDC.

The CDC has a recommendation for people to:

Do not consume e-cigarettes which contain THC as well as vaping items.

Avoid using sources that are not official, such as relatives, friends or online dealers to obtain smoking devices.

Do not alter or add any substances in a vaping device which do not meet the specifications of the manufacturer.

Research conducted by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients released in October 2021, reveals a myriad of chemical ingredients that are present in vape cigarettes many of which remain unidentified. The team was able to identify were a variety of potentially harmful chemicals, including caffeine, three chemicals never previously found in electronic cigarettes along with a pesticide as well as two flavors that could cause negative effects on breathing and respiratory irritation.

2: Research suggests smoking cigarettes is bad for the lungs and heart.

Nicotine is a major ingredient in regular cigarettes and electronic cigarettes, and it's highly addictive. You will crave smoking and also suffer withdrawal symptoms, if you fail to satisfy the craving. Nicotine can be a dangerous substance. It increases blood pressure. It also spikes your adrenaline, which raises your heart rate and the likelihood of having a heart attack.

Is vaping bad for you? There's plenty of questions surrounding vaping. These include the chemicals that make up the vapour and what they do to your physical health over the long haul. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," claims Blaha. "Emerging research suggests connections to lung diseases and chronic asthma, and correlations between dual usage of electronic cigarettes and smoking tobacco with cardiovascular disease. You're exposed to all kinds of chemicals that aren't fully understood and that are , in all likelihood, not healthy."

Electronic cigarettes are just exactly as addicting and addictive as the traditional cigarettes.

Both cigarettes and e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is believed by research to might be just as addictive as cocaine and heroin. But, as per Blaha that e-cigarette users obtain more nicotine than they do from a combustion cigarettes: Users can buy cartridges that are stronger, and contain more nicotine, or raise its voltage in order to get an even higher dose of the substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't the best smoking tools for quitting.

Though they've been advertised as a method to help smokers quit smoking, e-cigarettes aren't yet granted Food and Drug Administration approval as devices for quitting smoking. A recent study revealed that most people who intended using e-cigarettes for a reason to end their nicotine addiction ended up continuing to smoke traditional and electronic cigarettes.

With regard to the EVALI outbreak, the CDC urges users of electronic cigarettes to quit smoking to think about the risks and benefits and first look into other options for smoking cessation approved by the FDA.

5: A new generation is hooked on nicotine.

The use of electronic cigarettes among youth, particularly the disposable variety, is more popular than any smoking product that is traditionally used. As per the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high schools reported that students were using ecigarettes in 2021, with more than 8 percent of those teenagers using flavor-infused e-cigarettes.

According to Blaha the three reasons why electronic cigarettes could be attracted to young people. First, many teens believe vaping isn't as harmful as smoking. E-cigarettes also have a lower cost per-use than traditional cigarettes. And, finally, both adult and young appreciate the absence of smoke appealing. In addition, they do not smell. take away some of the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha adds. Blaha. "It's one thing if you shift from smoking cigarettes to vaping. It's something else to get started on nicotine usage with vaping. And, getting hooked on nicotine can result in the need for traditional tobacco products in the future."

Research conducted by the CDC indicates that the use of vapes among youngsters has decreased somewhat since 2020. Children who are left at home under the supervision of their parents during the COVID-19 syphilis could make a difference in this downward trend.

Youths change their preferences often and, when surveyed, may not consider using disposable products such as "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report claims that e-cigarette disposable consumption has increased by 1000 percent among high schoolers and 400% among middle school students from 2019 onwards.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

In the first year that the coronavirus virus pandemic beganto spread, Blaha says, data show that sales of electronic cigarettes fell most likely because people were staying in their homes, avoiding stores and public areas.

However, Blaha has noticed a trend that raises concerns: the rise for daily e-cigarette usage among almost all vape users. "The percentage of users in the world who vape every day was once 1 in 5now, but it's up quite a bit, which is worrying because it means more nicotine addiction. I'm keeping an check on that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping devices can vary in size, shape and color. Devices create aerosols from heating up a liquid that can be made up of flavorings and other chemical compounds that help make vaping less harsh (initially at least) then smoking. The liquid delivers nicotine marijuana, or other drugs to the user through the mouthpiece. This is then breathed into the lungs . Then, it is released through the mouth or the nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

The majority of these generally contain a liquid that contains up to one third of the nicotine content of cigarettes. For instance, one JUULpod that is 5% strong is created to replace an entire pack of cigarettes with nicotine strength. But vaping users face several health and safety dangers.

Nicotine, a stimulant which may harm the developing brain (which continues to expand until approximately 25 years of age), is found in a large number of electronic cigarettes. It's not always on the label according to a recently published CDC study.

The consumption of nicotine within the developing adolescent brains can harm parts that control:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Impulse control

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. A regular use of nicotine in adolescence could cause becoming addicted to cigarettes and other drugs.

In addition to nicotine, vaping liquid and subsequent vapors may also contain other hazardous substances such as:

Cancer-causing chemicals

Metals with heavy heft, such copper, lead and nickel

Flavorings can include diacetyl as one of the chemicals linked to lung disease

Organic compounds that are volatile

Ultra-fine particles which can be inhaled deeply into the lungs

Scientists are still learning about the negative effects of vaping, particularly around Vitamin E Acetate, which is a chemical that is added to certain vaping liquids that helps dilute. There were more than 2,500 patients hospitalized due to vaping-related injury on December 17 January, 2019. Vaping is also responsible for 54 deaths in 27 states and also the District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data, 3.6 million children in middle and high school use electronic cigarettes. The definition of use, which is at least one per each day during the last 30 days has increased around 78 percent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

The growing use of electronic cigarettes between middle school and high school students has resulted in an increase in cigarettes used by 38 per cent among high school students and 29 percent among middle schoolers.

E-cigarette use isn't restricted to teenagers: nine percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

E-cigarettes are a great option to be beneficial to adult smokers not pregnant , if used as the sole substitute for regular cigarettes and other tobacco products.

E-cigarettes aren't safe for adolescents, young adults, as well as pregnant mothers, as well as adults who currently do not smoke tobacco.

While e-cigarettes could prove benefits to some but cause harm to others, researchers have a lot of information to gather about whether e-cigarettes are effective for quitting smoking.

If you've never have you ever used other tobacco products or e-cigarettes, avoid starting.

Additional research can aid in understanding the long-term effects on health.
