You may be tempted use electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pen and other non-disposable, disposable device for smoking) in order to make it easier to transition from smoking cigarettes in the traditional way to non-smoking. But is smoking e cigarettes (also known as vaping) superior to using tobacco products? Can e-cigarettes help you to quit smoking once and all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease is a health expert who shares his knowledge about smoking e-cigarettes.
1 Smoking e-cigarettes is less harmful as smoking cigarettes, but it's not entirely safe.
E-cigarettes burn nicotine (extracted from tobacco) along with flavorings and other chemicals to form an aerosol which you inhale. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, many of that are harmful. While we don't know exactly the chemicals in e-cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."
However, there has been an outbreak of lung injuries and death that is associated with vaping. In vape abu dhabi of 2020, there was a report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified 28007 cases of ecigarettes or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI) and at least 68 deaths related to this disease.
"These instances seem to have an effect on people who modify the vaping devices they use or the black market for e-liquids that have been modified. This is especially the case with the vape products that are made up of THC," explains Blaha.
The CDC has identified vitamin E Acylone as a possible chemical which is of concern for patients suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E Acetate is a thickening agent often used in THC vaping products, and it was found in all samples of lung fluid taken from patients with EVALI and analyzed by CDC.
The CDC encourages people to:
Do not use e cigarettes that contain THC in vaping and other vape products.
Avoid using informal sources, such as friends, family or online vendors to get a vaping device.
Do not alter or add any substances to a device for vaping that is not permitted by the manufacturer.
The research conducted by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in the month of October 2021 provides a wealth of chemical elements in vape product including many that aren't known yet. One of the ingredients that the team was able determine were potentially harmful ingredients, including caffeine. three chemicals that have never been previously identified in e-cigarettes, a pesticide and two flavorings associated with negative effects on breathing and respiratory irritation.
2. Research suggests smoking cigarettes is bad for the lungs and heart.
Nicotine is most commonly used in traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it's extremely addictive. You will crave smoking cigarettes and to experience withdrawal symptoms when you don't address the urge. Nicotine can be a dangerous substance. It increases your blood pressure and elevates your adrenaline levels, which increase your heart rate as well as the risk of having a heart attack.
Do you think vaping is harmful for your health? There's a myriad of questions regarding vaping. This includes the substances that make up the vapor , and the effects they have on your health over the longer term. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," claims Blaha. "Emerging data suggests links to chronic lung disease and asthma, as well as evidence linking dual use of tobacco and smoking with cardiovascular disease. You're exposing yourself to many different chemicals that aren't fully understood and that are probably not harmful."
Electronic cigarettes are equally addictive and addictive like traditional ones.
E-cigarettes, like regular cigarettes, contain nicotine, and studies have suggested that it might be as addictive cocaine and heroin. What's worse, says Blaha, a lot of people who use e-cigarettes are able to get more nicotine than they would from a combustible tobacco product. Users are able to purchase cartridges with extra strength, which contain more nicotine, or raise the voltage of an e-cigarette to get more nicotine substance.
Electronic cigarettes aren't the best smoking elimination tool.
While they've been marketed as a method to help users quit smoking, they haven't been granted Food and Drug Administration approval as a smoking cessation device. A recent study showed that the majority of those who intended that they would use ecigarettes to cut the nicotine habit ended up still using traditional and electronic cigarettes.
Due to EVALI outbreak, the CDC urges users of electronic cigarettes to quit smoking to think about the risks and benefits and first look into other alternatives to smoking cessation that have been approved by FDA.
5: A new generation is addicted to nicotine.
For young people, e-cigarettes, particularly the disposable variety can be found in greater demand than any traditionally-made tobacco. In the report 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high teens reported using electronic cigarettes in 2021, with more than 8 percent of those youngsters using flavored electronic cigarettes.
According to Blaha the three reasons why electronic cigarettes could be particularly appealing to teenagers. Most teens believe vaping is safer than smoking. Also, e-cigarettes carry a lower cost per usage than traditional cigarettes. Finally, youths and adults like the fact that there is no smoke appealing. They are also odorless, which helps help to reduce the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.
"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," says Blaha. "It's the same thing when you quit smoking cigarettes and switch to vaping. It's something else to begin using nicotine with vaping. And, getting hooked on nicotine usually leads to using traditional tobacco products in the future."
The research conducted by the CDC indicates that the use of vapes among adolescents has dropped somewhat since 2020. The fact that children are at home under their parents' supervision during the COVID-19 outbreak could play a role in the decline.
Young people are prone to changing their preferences frequently and, if interviewed, may not have a thought of the use of disposable products like "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report claims that disposable electronic cigarettes consumption has increased by 1000 percent among high school students and 400 percent among middle school students since the beginning of 2019.
Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic
When the coronavirus pandemic first took hold, Blaha saysthat the research shows that sales of e-cigarettes fell most likely because people were spending more time at home and avoiding stores and public places.
But Blaha finds a trend which has him worried: rising rates of daily e-cigarette use among any vape user. "The percentage of people use to vape regularly was previously 1 in 5, but today it's up quite a bit, that's concerning since it means more nicotine addiction. I'm keeping a close check on that."
What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know
How Does Vape Work?
Vaping devices may vary in form, size, and size and. Devices produce an aerosol byproduct caused by heating up a liquid which is sometimes made up of flavorings and other chemical compounds that help make vaping less harsh (initially at the very least) then smoking. The liquid provides nicotine, marijuana, or some other substance to the user through a mouthpiece that is inhaled into the lungs . This is then expelled through the mouth, or nose.
Vaping Health and Safety Risks
These products typically include a liquid with about one-third to half the nicotine in a cigarette--for example, one JUULpod at 5% strength is created to replace an entire pack of cigarettes with nicotine strength, vaping users are still faced with several health and safety dangers.
Nicotine, a stimulant which may harm the developing brain (which grows until approximately 25 years of age) is present in a number of e-cigarettes, however it is not all of them are listed on the label according to a latest CDC study.
The use of nicotine within the developing adolescent brains can damage the areas that regulate:
Learning
Mood
Attention
Control by impulse
Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. An ongoing use in adolescence will make it more likely for developing a dependence on cigarettes and other substances.
In addition to nicotine vaping liquid and the resulting vapors could also contain other harmful substances like:
Cancer-causing chemicals
Metals with heavy heft, such lead, nickel, and tin
Flavorings, such as diacetyl an ingredient that is linked to lung disease
Organic compounds that are volatile
Ultra-fine particles are those that can be breathed deep into the lungs.
Scientists are still researching the effects from vaping, mainly around Vitamin E acetate, an ingredient in many vaping liquids in order to dilute. There were more than 2,500 cases of users receiving treatment for vaping-related injuries as of the 17th of December on the 17th of December in 2019. Vaping has also contributed to 54 deaths in 27 states as well as within the District of Columbia.
Who is Vaping?
According to the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) information, 3.6 million children in middle school and high schools use electronic cigarettes. In the definition of using at least one a each day during the last 30 calendar days, has risen nearly 78 per cent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.
The growth of e-cigarettes in middle and upper school students has resulted in an increase in overall tobacco use by 38 percent among high school students and 29 percent for middle schoolers.
Vaping with electronic cigarettes isn't only for adolescents. Nine percent U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

E-cigarettes could assist adult smokers who not pregnant , if used as an alternative to regular cigarettes and other tobacco products.
E-cigarettes pose a risk to teenagers, young adults pregnancy women and children, as well as those who do not take tobacco products.
Although e-cigarettes could be able to be beneficial to some, but affect others, experts need to know more about the efficacy of electronic cigarettes in helping people quit smoking.
If you've never smoked or tried other tobacco products or electronic cigarettes, don't get started.
More research can help better understand long-term health effects.
