Vaping Facts You Need to Know
You may want to try electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pen, and other disposable Vaping equipment that is disposable) as a means to assist in the transition from smoking cigarettes in the traditional way to quitting smoking altogether. But is using e-cigarettes (also called vaping) superior to using tobacco products? Could e-cigarettes assist you in stop smoking once and for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease offers health information about smoking e-cigarettes.

1 The use of vaping is less harmful than smokingtobacco, but smoking cigarettes isn't completely safe.

E-cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco) flavourings, flavorings and substances to produce an aerosol that you breathe in. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, most of which are harmful. While we don't know exactly what chemicals are found in e-cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

There has been an upsurge of lung injuries , and even deaths that have been linked with vaping. In February of 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 28007 cases of e-cigarettes or vaping use-associated with lung injuries (EVALI) and nearly 68 deaths were linked to the condition.

"These instances appear to primarily concern people who alter their devices for vaping or who use dark market e-liquids. This is especially the case with vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E Acylone as a possible chemical that should be considered a risk for people who suffer from EVALI. Vitamin E acetate can be a thickening agent frequently employed in THC vaping products, and it was found in the lung fluid samples that EVALI patients were examined for the CDC.

The CDC recommends that people:

Do not consume e-cigarettes which contain THC such as vaping cigarettes.

Do not rely on informal sources like relatives, friends or online stores to purchase smoking devices.

Do not alter or add any substances in a vaping device which does not belong to the manufacturer.

A study conducted by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 reveals thousands of chemical components found in vape cigarettes some of which have not been identified yet. The team was able to find were a number of potentially harmful chemicals, including caffeine, three chemicals not previously seen in electronic cigarettes that include pesticides and two flavorings suspected of having adverse effects on respiratory health and toxic.

2: Research suggests vaping can be harmful to your heart and lungs.

Nicotine is the main ingredient in regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes. it is highly addictive. It causes you to desire smoking and may trigger withdrawal symptoms if not addressing the desire. Nicotine is toxic. It raises your blood pressure and elevates your adrenaline, which raises your heart rate as well as chances of having heart attack.

Do you think that vaping is bad for you? There's lots of mystery about vaping, including the ingredients that are in the vapor and how they affect physical health over the longer term. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," says Blaha. "Emerging evidence suggests that they may be linked to lung diseases that are chronic and asthma, as well as connections between the use of electronic cigarettes and smoking cigarettes with cardiovascular disease. You're exposed to all kinds of chemicals that we're not fully understanding and are likely to not be risk-free."

Electronic cigarettes can be just the same addictive ones.

Both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes contain nicotine. Research suggests it can be as addictive cocaine and heroin. However, according Blaha and others, people who smoke e-cigarettes are able to get more nicotine than the combustible tobacco product. Customers can buy cartridges with an extra strength that have a higher concentration of nicotine, or increase the e-cigarette's power to get an increased dose of the substance.

Electronic cigarettes may not be the most effective smoking cessation tool.

Although they've been promoted for their ability to aid people quit smoking, ecigarettes don't have Food and Drug Administration approval for smoking cessation devices. A study conducted recently found many people who wanted using e-cigarettes for a reason to end smoking cigarettes ended up continuing to use traditional and e-cigarettes.

Amid the EVALI outbreak, the CDC recommends those who are using electronic cigarettes to quit smoking to assess the risks and advantages prior to deciding on other options approved by FDA for smoking cessation.

5 A new generation of people is addicted to nicotine.

The use of electronic cigarettes among youth, especially the disposable kind, tend to be more beloved than conventional tobacco item. Based on the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high schoolers reported using e-cigarettes in 2021, with over 8 percent of those teens using flavored e-cigarettes.

According to Blaha there are three motives why electronic cigarettes are particularly enticing to young people. Many teens believe that vaping is safer than smoking. Additionally, e-cigarettes come with a lower cost per-use than traditional cigarettes. In addition, both adults and youth feel that the absence of smoke appealing. Because they are not scented, e-cigarettes alleviate some of the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha said. Blaha. "It's something to switch from smoking cigarettes to vaping. It's a different matter to begin using nicotine with vaping. Also, being addicted to nicotine often leads to using traditional tobacco products down the road."

Research from the CDC confirms that vaping among youngsters has diminished somewhat since 2020. Parents who have children under their parents' supervision during the COVID-19 outbreak could cause this trend.

Young people are prone to changing their preferences often and, when interviewed, may not have a thought of the use of disposable products like "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC research report finds that disposable vaping usage has increased by 1000 percent among high school students and 400 percent among middle school students from the year 2019.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

When the coronavirus pandemic first was discovered, Blaha says, data show that sales of e-cigarettes decreased likely due to people staying at home and away from stores as well as public areas.

But Blaha observes a pattern that concerns him: rising rates of daily e-cigarette consumption among most vape consumers. "The amount of people with a habit of vape regularly used to be 1 out of five, but in recent times it's rising quite a bit and that's worrying since it means more nicotine addiction. I'm keeping a close eye on that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping devices can differ in terms of shape, size and the color. Vaping devices release aerosols generated by the heating of a liquid, which can contain flavors and other chemicals that can make vaping less harsh (initially at the very least) more than smoking. The liquid is able to deliver nicotine, marijuana, or other drugs to the user through an inhaler that is inserted into the lungs then expelled via the mouth or nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

While these products typically include a liquid with up to one third of the nicotine content of cigarettes. For instance, one JUULpod containing 5% strength is designed to replace an entire pack of cigarettes with the strength of nicotine, vaping consumers still face the risk of health and safety.

Nicotine, a stimulant which can be harmful to the developing brain (which continues to grow until about 25 years of age), is found in a number of e-cigarettes, however it is not always on the packaging according to a recently published CDC study.

The use of nicotine within the developing adolescent brains can cause harm to parts that regulate:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Controlling impulses

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. A regular use of nicotine in adolescence could make it more likely for later addiction to cigarettes or other substances.

Other than nicotine vaping liquid, the liquid that vapes and then the inhalation could contain other dangerous substance, for example:

Cancer-causing chemicals

Metals of heavy use, including lead, tin, and nickel

Flavorings including diacetyl which is a chemical that has been linked to lung disease

Organic compounds that are volatile

Ultra-fine particles are those that can be inhaled deep into the lungs

Scientists are still in the process of learning about the negative effects that vaping can have, particularly in relation to Vitamin E Acetate, which is the chemical in some liquids for vaping to help dilute. More than 2,500 cases were reported of users receiving treatment for vaping-related injuries in the week of December 17 January, 2019. Vaping has also resulted in 54 deaths across 27 states as well as The District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) information, 3.6 million children in middle school and high school are using electronic cigarettes. This is defined as using at least one time per daily over the past 30 days, has increased nearly 78 per cent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

E-cigarette use is on the rise in middle and high school students has led to an increase in tobacco use of 38 percent for high schoolers and 29 percent among middle schoolers.

E-cigarette usage isn't restricted to adolescents. Nine percent U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape .

E-cigarettes have the potential to aid adult smokers and are not expecting when used as an all-in-one replacement for regular cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products.

E-cigarettes are not safe for youngsters, young adults as well as pregnant mothers, as well as adults who do use tobacco products.

While e-cigarettes might be able in helping some people, and hurt others, scientists have a lot to learn about whether electronic cigarettes are effective for quitting smoking.

If you've never smoked or tried other tobacco products or electronic cigarettes, stop now.

Further research is needed to better understand the long-term health consequences.
