Vaping Facts You Need to Know
You might be tempted to go to vaping with electronic devices (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other nondisposable, disposable device for smoking) as a way of ease the transition from smoking cigarettes in the traditional way to using no tobacco at all. But are e-cigarettes (also called vaping) superior to smoking tobacco? Can e-cigarettes be used to end smoking tobacco once and for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease and shares information about health benefits of vaping.

1 The use of vaping is less harmful than smoking, but it's still not a safe option.

E-cigarettes warm nicotine (extracted from tobacco) flavorings, flavorings, and other chemicals to form an aerosol that you breathe in. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, many that are harmful. While we're not sure the chemicals in e-cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

There have been reports of lung injuries , and even deaths that have been linked vaping. In February 2020 in February 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 28007 cases of e-cigarettes, or vaping-related lung injury (EVALI) and 68 deaths attributed to that disease.

"These cases are believed to touch those who alter their vaping devices or use dark market e-liquids. This is especially the case with vaping products that contain THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E Acetate as one of the chemicals of concern to people suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E Acetate is a thickening chemical commonly employed in THC vape products. it was identified in all samples of lung fluid of patients suffering from EVALI analyzed by the CDC.

The CDC encourages people to:

Avoid using e-cigarettes that contain THC Vaping or other products.

Avoid using informal sources, like your family and friends or online vendors to get Vaping equipment.

Do not alter or add any substances to a vaping device , which isn't intended by the manufacturer.

Research conducted by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients released in October 2021 revealed thousands of chemical ingredients found in vape devices many of which remain unidentified. What the researchers were able to determine were potentially harmful chemicals, including caffeine. three chemical compounds that were not previously discovered in electronic cigarettes in the past, pesticides, and two flavorings with potential toxic effects and respiratory irritation.

2. Research suggests smoking cigarettes can be detrimental to the lungs and heart.

Nicotine is the primary agent in traditional cigarettes as well as e-cigarettes. it's extremely addictive. Nicotine causes one to desire smoking and also suffer withdrawal symptoms should you not acknowledge the craving. Nicotine is a toxic substance. It increases your blood pressure and boosts your adrenaline, which raises your heart rate and the possibility of suffering from a heart attack.

Are vaping cigarettes harmful to your health? There's plenty of questions surrounding vaping, such as the chemicals that make up the vapor , and how they affect your physical health in the long run. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," says Blaha. "Emerging research suggests connections to chronic lung disease and asthma, as well as links between dual use of electronic cigarettes and smoking cigarettes with cardiovascular disease. You're exposing yourself to all sorts of chemicals that we're not fully understanding and that are , in all likelihood, not harmful."

Electronic cigarettes are just similar to traditional cigarettes.

Both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes contain nicotine, which studies suggest might be just as addictive as cocaine and heroin. In fact, according to Blaha most users of e-cigarettes obtain more nicotine than the combustible tobacco product: Users can purchase cartridges with extra strength, which contain higher levels of nicotine, or increase the voltage of an e-cigarette to get an even higher dose of the substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't necessarily the best smoking method for quitting.

Although they've been promoted as an aid to help users quit smoking, e-cigarettes have not received Food and Drug Administration approval to be used as a method of quitting smoking. A recent study discovered that the majority of those who wanted to quit smoking e-cigarettes the habit ended up continuing to use traditional and e-cigarettes.

Amid the EVALI outbreak, the CDC recommends those who are using electronic cigarettes to quit smoking to take into account the risks and rewards and to first think about using alternative options that are FDA-approved for smoking cessation.

5: A new generation is getting addicted to nicotine.

At the age of 15, e-cigarettes particularly those with disposable cartridges, tend to be more beloved than standard tobacco product. From the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students said they used e-cigarettes in 2021. There was more than eight-in-ten of those teenagers using flavor-infused e-cigarettes.

According to Blaha there are three reasons why ecigarettes can be especially appealing to teens. A first reason is that a lot of teens believe vaping is less harmful than smoking. E-cigarettes also have a lower price per-use than traditional cigarettes. For the third, both adult and youth love the absence smoke attractive. In addition, they do not smell. help to reduce the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha said. Blaha. "It's something to shift from smoking cigarettes to vaping. It's quite another thing to get started on nicotine usage with vaping. Once you're hooked, nicotine is often the reason for using traditional tobacco products later on."

Research conducted by the CDC suggests that vaping adolescents has dropped somewhat since 2020. Kids who stay at home under the supervision of their parents during the COVID-19 pandemic may help in this direction.

Teenagers alter their tastes often, and, when asked, might not be thinking of smoking disposable items such as "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report says that disposable e-cigarette use has increased by 1,000 percent among high schoolers and 400% among middle school students in the last year.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

The coronavirus outbreak first took hold, Blaha claims, the data prove that sales of e-cigarettes fell in part due to people spending more time in their homes, avoiding stores and public spaces.

But Blaha notices a trend that is troubling him: the rising rate that people use e-cigarettes daily among the majority of vape smokers. "The percentage of people who vape daily used to be 1 out of 5, but now it's growing quite a lot, which is troubling because it could indicate a rise in nicotine addiction. I'm keeping a close check on that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping equipment can differ in shape, size and colors. They generate an aerosol due to the process of heating liquid that can be made up of flavorings as well as other chemicals that allow vaping to appear less harsh (initially at the very least) as compared to smoking. This liquid can deliver nicotine, marijuana, or another drug to the user via the mouthpiece, which is breathed through the lungs and then expelling through the mouth or nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

While many of these products typically include a liquid with approximately one-third to half of the nicotine contained in cigarettes. As an example, one JUULpod strength of 5% is meant to replace an entire pack of cigarettes in nicotine strength. But vaping users face some health-related and safety concerns.

Nicotine, a stimulant which can harm the developing adolescent brain (which grows until the age of 25 age), is found in a wide variety of electronic cigarettes, although they are not always identified on the label according to a new CDC study.

The use to take nicotine in adolescent brains could damage parts that regulate:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Impulse control

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. The habitual use in adolescence may be a risk factor for becoming addicted to cigarettes and other drugs.

In addition to nicotine in vaping, vaping liquids and their subsequent vapor could also contain harmful substances including:

Cancer-causing chemicals

Metals with heavy weights like lead, tin, or nickel

Flavorings that include diacetyl are an element that is connected to lung disease

Organic compounds that are volatile

Ultra-fine particles can be breathed deep into the lungs.

Scientists are still studying the impacts of vaping, especially surrounding Vitamin E acetate, a chemical added to some vaping liquids in order to dilute. There were morethan2,500 cases of patients hospitalized due to vaping-related injury as of December 17 on the 17th of December in 2019. Vaping is also responsible for 54 deaths across 27 states as well as The District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) information, 3.6 million children in middle school and high schools use electronic cigarettes. Smoking, defined as minimum of once per day for the last thirty days, has grown by around 78 percent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

The increase in e-cigarette usage within middle and high school students has resulted in an increase in smoking of tobacco, which is 38 percent among high school students and 29 percent among middle students in middle school.

E-cigarette use isn't limited to adolescents. Nine percent U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

E-cigarettes are a great option to assist adult smokers who not expecting if they are used as an entire substitute for regular cigarettes and other tobacco products.

E-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnancies, and people who don't currently take tobacco products.

Even though e-cigarettes are able to help some people but hurt others, scientists have a lot to learn about whether e-cigarettes can be effective for quitting smoking.

If you've not ever have you ever used other tobacco products or electronic cigarettes, then don't try it.

Further research could help in understanding the long-term effects on health.
