iptv (IPTV) is the transfer of television content over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This is in contrast to the traditional terrestrial, satellite, and cable television format. Instead of downloading the mediasources, IPTV offers the ability to stream media in a continuous manner. IPTV is an online television service which uses an Internet protocol. IPTV could also be utilized to deliver media around corporate or private networks. The continuous standardization process for IPTV within the telecoms industry (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is a highlight.

IPTV services may be classified into live television and live media, with or without the interactivity associated with it; shifts in time of media, e.g., catch-up television (replays shows on TV that was broadcast a few hours or days back) and start-over television (replays the current program from the beginning); and the video-on-demand (VOD) where you browse or viewing items in a media catalogue.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The ITU's focus on IPTV on IPTV accepted this official definition:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

A different definition of IPTV in relation to the industry of telecoms is that of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV refers to safe and reliable distribution of entertainment video and other related services to customers. These services may include such things as Live TV, Video On Demand (VOD) and Interactive TV (iTV). They can be provided through an internet-agnostic and packet switched network, using the IP protocol for audio, video and control signals.
