Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the transfer of television programs over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. It differs from broadcasting via traditional terrestrial, satellite, and cable television format. IPTV permits you to stream media sources continuously, unlike downloading media. Client media players are able to play the source media, like television channels, in a matter of minutes. This is also known as streaming media.

IPTV is an Internet-based television service that uses an Internet protocol. IPTV is found in a myriad of subscriber-based networks with high-speed channel services for customers via set-top boxes and various other gadgets. IPTV is also employed for streaming media across private and corporate networks. IPTV is a telecommunications industry that is notable due to its current standardisation process (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute).

IPTV is classified into live television and live media. Live media can have or without interactivity. time shifting of media, e.g., catch-up TV (replays an episode of a television show that was broadcast a few hours or days long ago) as well as start-over TV (replays the current television show starting from the beginning); and videos on demand (VOD) that involves browsing or viewing items in a media catalogue.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The ITU's focus committee IPTV on IPTV accepted this official definition:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

A more flexible definition of IPTV that relates to the telecommunications sector is one provided by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, IPTV Exploratory Group, in 2005.

iptv can be defined as the safe and secure delivery to subscribers of entertainment and related video services. This can include Live TV, Video On Demand and Interactive TV (iTV). These services can be delivered via an internet-agnostic, packet switched network, that utilizes the IP protocol to transmit audio, video and control signals. IPTV deployments are more secure than streaming video over the Internet. Additionally, they provide superior performance and security.
