Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the distribution of TV content over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This differs from traditional broadcasting via satellite or terrestrial. In contrast to downloaded media IPTV provides the capability to stream content continually. A client media player is able to play the source media, like television channels, in a matter of minutes. This is known as streaming media.

Even though IPTV employs the Internet protocol it is not restricted to streaming television via the Internet (Internet TV). IPTV is available in many subscriber-based telecommunications networks that provide high-speed channels to customers via set-top boxes and various other gadgets. IPTV can also be used to provide streaming media across private and public networks. iptv of IPTV in the telecoms sector (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is one of the highlights.

You can categorize IPTV services in terms of live TV and/or media, either with or without interactivity.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. A definition officially that has been approved by the International Telecommunication Union focus group on IPTV (ITU-T FG IPTV) is:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

Another definition of IPTV, relating to the industry of telecommunications, is one that was provided by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV can be defined as the security and reliability of the distribution to viewers of entertainment and related video services. These services may include such things as Live TV, Video On Demand (VOD) and Interactive TV (iTV). These are services that are available on an access agnostic, packet switched network which uses the IP protocol to transport the video, audio and control signals. IPTV deployments are more secure as compared to video streaming on the Internet. They also deliver superior speed and safety.
