Internet Protocol TV (IPTV), is the transmission of TV content using Internet Protocol (IP). It is different from satellite and terrestrial television delivery. IPTV lets you stream content on a continuous basis and is not a substitute for downloading the media. A player for media on the client is able to play the source content, such as television channels, in a matter of minutes. This is also known as streaming media.

While IPTV utilizes the Internet protocol it is not limited to television streamed through internet television. iptv (Internet TV). IPTV is available on a wide range of subscriber-based telecommunications systems which offer high-speed channels for the end-users via set top boxes and various other gadgets. IPTV could also be utilized to deliver media around corporate or private networks. The ongoing standardization process of IPTV in the telecoms sector (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is one of the highlights.

IPTV service can be classed as live television and live media. Live media can have or without the interactivity associated with it; shifts in time of media, e.g., catch-up TV (replays a TV show that was broadcast hours or even days long ago) as well as start-over TV (replays the current show beginning from when it was broadcast) or video on demand (VOD) that allows browsing and/or viewing content from a media catalogue.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The ITU's focus group IPTV on IPTV accepted this official definition:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

A different definition of IPTV with respect to the telecom industry is the one given by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV is the term used to describe the secure and reliable distribution of entertainment and related services for subscribers. These services may include the likes of Live TV, Video On Demand (VOD) as well as Interactive TV (iTV). The services are available via an internet-agnostic, packet switched network, that utilizes the IP protocol to deliver audio, video, as well as control signals. While video is not available on the internet, IPTV is a public Internet in IPTV deployments, security of the network as well as performance are ensured.
