Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the distribution of TV content over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. It is different from satellite and terrestrial television delivery. In contrast to downloaded media IPTV offers the ability to stream content continually. Thus, a client media player can start playing content (such for example, a television channel) within a few seconds. This is called streaming media.

While IPTV employs the Internet protocol, it's not only restricted to broadcasting television by the Internet (Internet TV). iptv can be found on a wide range of subscriber-based telecommunications systems that provide high-speed channels to customers via set-top boxes and other equipment. IPTV can also be used to distribute media across the corporate and private networks. IPTV in the telecommunications arena is notable due to its current normalisation process (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute).

You can categorize IPTV services in terms of live TV and/or media that has interactivity or not.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The focus group IPTV on IPTV approved this official definition:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

An alternative definition of IPTV which is related to telecoms sector was offered by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, IPTV Exploratory Group, in 2005.

IPTV refers to safe and reliable distribution of entertainment videos and other related services to subscribers. These services may include like Live TV, Video On Demand (VOD) and Interactive TV (iTV). The services are available via an internet-agnostic, packet switched network that uses the IP protocol to transmit audio, video and control signals. IPTV deployments are safer than streaming video over the Internet. They also deliver superior speed and safety.
