Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the delivery of television content via Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This is in contrast to traditional terrestrial and satellite television. IPTV lets you stream content on a continuous basis as opposed to downloading it. A player for media on the client is capable of streaming the source media content, for example television channels, in a matter of minutes. iptv is referred to as streaming media.

IPTV is an Internet-based television service which uses technology based on the Internet protocol. IPTV can be found in the subscriber-based telecoms industry with fast access channels for end-users' homes via set-top boxes and other equipment for customers' premises. IPTV is also used for media delivery around corporate or private networks. IPTV in the field of telecoms is notable for its ongoing procedure of standardization (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute).

It is possible to categorize IPTV as live television and/or live media with or without interactivity.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The most official definition that has been accepted from the International Telecommunication Union focus group on IPTV (ITU-T FG IPTV) is:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

A more flexible definition of IPTV with respect to the telecom industry was provided by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions, IPTV Exploratory Group, in 2005.

IPTV refers to safe and secure delivery of entertainment video and other associated services to users. It could be Live TV, Video On Demand, and Interactive TV (iTV). They can be provided over an internet-agnostic packet switched network, which uses the IP protocol to deliver audio, video, and control signals.
