Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the delivery of television programs over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This is distinct from traditional satellite and terrestrial television delivery. Instead of downloading the mediasources, IPTV allows streaming of source media in a continuous manner. In turn, the client media player will start playing content (such as TV channels) in a matter of minutes. iptv is called streaming media.

IPTV is an internet-based TV service that utilizes an Internet protocol. IPTV is extensively used in telecom networks that are subscriber-based and have high-speed access channels that are inserted into the end-user premises via set-top boxes or any other devices for customer premises. IPTV can also be utilized to deliver media around the corporate and private networks. The ongoing standardization process of IPTV in the telecoms sector (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is an important aspect.

You can categorize IPTV services as live TV and/or live media, either with or without interactivity.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The International Telecommunication Union's focus group IPTV on IPTV adopted this definition as official:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

Another definition of IPTV with respect to the telecommunications industry, is one that was provided by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV can be defined as the safe and secure delivery to subscribers of entertainment and related video services. These services may include, for example, Live TV, Video On Demand (VOD) as well as Interactive TV (iTV). They are offered on an access agnostic, packet switched network which uses the IP protocol to transport the audio, video as well as control signals. As opposed to streaming video on the internet, IPTV is a public Internet, with IPTV deployments, security of the network as well as performance are ensured.
