Vaping Facts You Need to Know
There are many reasons to try electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pen and other non-disposable as well as disposable electronic cigarettes) to facilitate the transition from smoking traditional cigarettes and using no tobacco at all. But is smoking e cigarettes (also known as vaping) superior to smoking tobacco? Are they able to help you end smoking tobacco once and for all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease is a health expert who shares his knowledge about vaping.

1 Smoking e-cigarettes is less harmful that smoking cigarettes. However, it's still not a safe option.

E-cigarettes are a method of heating nicotine (extracted from tobacco), flavorings and other chemicals to form an aerosol that you breathe in. Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7000 chemicals, most of which are toxic. While we're not sure the ingredients in e cigarette, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

However, there was a sudden increase in lung-related injuries and deaths with vaping. In February of 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) verified 2,807 cases of e-cigarette or vaping-related Lung injury (EVALI) and there were 68 deaths linked to that disease.

"These cases are believed to touch those who alter their vaping devices or use dark market e-liquids. This is particularly the case with cigarettes that contain THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E Acetate as a compound of concern to people suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E acetate is a thinning agent commonly employed in THC vape products. it was identified in all lung fluid samples of EVALI patients examined by CDC.

The CDC recommends that people:

Do not consume e-cigarettes which contain THC also known as vaping.

Do not use informal sources like relatives, friends or online merchants to purchase the device for vaping.

Do not modify or add substances to a vaping device , which are not intended by the manufacturer.

Research by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in the month of October 2021 found that there are thousands of chemical ingredients found in vape brands most of which aren't known yet. In the list of ingredients the team was able identify were a variety of potentially harmful substances, like caffeine, three chemicals previously not found in e-cigarettes in the past, pesticides, and two flavorings known to cause exposure to respiratory irritation and toxic effects.

2. Research suggests that smoking is harmful to your heart and lungs.

Nicotine is the principal ingredient in traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it's extremely addictive. It causes you to desire smoking cigarettes and to experience withdrawal symptoms should you not acknowledge the desire. Nicotine is toxic. It increases your blood pressure and elevates your adrenaline levels, which increase your heart rate and the chance of suffering a heart attack.

Is vaping harmful for you? There are many facets to consider when smoking e-cigarettes, including what chemicals comprise the vapor as well as how they affect health over the long haul. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," claims Blaha. "Emerging research suggests connections to lung diseases and chronic asthma, as well as interactions between electronic cigarettes and smoking tobacco with cardiovascular disease. You're exposed for all sorts of harmful chemicals that aren't understood yet and that are probably not completely safe."

Electronic cigarettes are just much as addicting as conventional cigarettes.

Both cigarettes and e-cigarettes contain nicotine, and research suggests that it that they are as addictive as heroin and cocaine. And, according to Blaha and others, people who smoke e-cigarettes will get more nicotine that they would with a conventional tobacco product. Users can purchase cartridges with extra strength, which contain higher levels of nicotine, or raise the voltage of the e-cigarette, resulting in a greater hit of the substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't the best smoking cessation tool.

Although they've been touted as a means to assist to quit smoking, electronic cigarettes don't have Food and Drug Administration approval for smoking cessation devices. A study conducted recently found that the majority people who planned to try e-cigarettes in order to get rid of the habit of smoking nicotine ended up using traditional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.

Due to EVALI outbreak, the CDC advises people who use e-cigarettes for smoking cessation to evaluate the potential risks and benefits and first look into alternative options that are FDA-approved for smoking cessation.

5 A new generation of people is addicted to nicotine.

As a result, among young people, electronic cigarettes, particularly those with disposable cartridges become more popular in comparison to other tobacco-based product. From the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students said they used e-cigarettes in 2021. With more than eight in 10 youngsters using flavored electronic cigarettes.

According to Blaha, there are three reasons why electronic cigarettes could be particularly appealing to teenagers. The first is that many teenagers believe vaping is not as harmful as smoking. The second reason is that e-cigarettes have a less expensive cost per unit than traditional cigarettes. For the third, both adult and youth appreciate the absence of smoke attractive. The absence of smell can remove some of the stigma associated with smoking.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha claims. Blaha. "It's something to switch from smoking cigarettes to vaping. But it's quite another thing when you start your nicotine addiction with vaping. As well, getting addicted to nicotine can lead to the purchase of traditional tobacco products in the future."

Research conducted by the CDC indicates that the use of vapes among youth has decreased somewhat over the past year, but not as much as the year 2020. Parents who have children under their parents' supervision in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic might cause this trend.

Young people change their preferences frequently, and, when surveyed, may not consider smoking disposable items such as "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report says that disposable e-cigarette use has grown by 1,000 percent among high school students and 400% among middle school students since 2019.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

When the coronavirus-related pandemic began, Blaha states that data shows that the sales of electronic cigarettes dropped likely due to people staying in their homes, avoiding stores as well as public areas.

But Blaha notices a trend that concerns him: rising rates of daily use of e-cigarettes among all vape user. " vape abu dhabi of people using vape daily was 1 in 5people, but lately it's up quite a bit, and that's worrying since it suggests a rise in nicotine dependence. I'm keeping an monitor on this."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping devices may vary in form, size, and size and. Devices create aerosols when they heat up a liquid, which can contain flavors and other chemicals that allow vaping to appear less harsh (initially at the very least) as compared to smoking. This liquid can deliver nicotine, marijuana, or other substances to the user via the mouthpiece. This is then breathed into the lungs . This is then removed through the mouth or nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

Many of these items typically include a liquid with 1/3 to 1/2 of the nicotine used in cigarettes. For instance, one JUULpod at 5% strength is created to replace an entire pack of cigarettes in the strength of nicotine, vaping consumers still face various health and safety issues.

Nicotine, a stimulant which could cause harm to the growing adolescent brain (which grows until about 25 years of age), is found in a number of e-cigarettes, however it is often not listed on the label according to a latest CDC study.

The use of nicotine in developing adolescents' brains could damage parts which control:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Control by impulse

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. Regular usage in adolescence can also increase the risk of later addiction to cigarettes or other drugs.

Other than nicotine, vaping liquid and subsequent vapor may include other harmful compounds, including

Cancer-causing chemicals

Heavy metals such as lead, tin, and nickel

Flavorings like diacetyl a chemical associated with lung disease

Organic compounds that are volatile

Ultra-fine particles can be inhaled deep into the lungs

Scientists are still actively studying the effects of vaping, specifically around Vitamin E Acetate, one of the chemicals that are added to many vape liquids to help dilute. There were over 2,500 instances of patients receiving treatment for vaping related injury as of December 17 January, 2019. Vaping has also led to 54 deaths in 27 states and also the District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) information, 3.6 million children in middle school and high schools utilize electronic cigarettes. Usage, defined as at least once a day over the past 30 days, has increased by nearly 78 per cent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

The increase in e-cigarette usage during middle school and in high school students has resulted in an increase in overall tobacco smoking by 38 percent among high school students and 29 percent among middle school students.

The use of electronic cigarettes doesn't limit adolescents. Nine percent U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

Electronic cigarettes could be beneficial to adult smokers not pregnant if used as a substitute for regular cigarettes as well as other tobacco products.

They are not safe for adolescents, young adults, pregnancies, or adults who currently do not use tobacco products.

While e-cigarettes might be able benefits to some but hurt others, scientists need to know more about whether e-cigarettes are effective in helping people quit smoking.

If you've never consumed other tobacco products or electronic cigarettes, then don't try it.

Further research could help in understanding the long-term health consequences.
