Background. ▲ Prior to 2010, Eyjafjallajökull had erupted in 920, 1612-1613, and 1821-23. It is a moderately active volcano, but, relatively less active than its neighbors Katla and Eldfell.Eyjafjallajokull is a volcano that is entirely covered by an ice cap. It is located on the south coast of the island of Iceland, about 3km inland.
Its unusual and difficult to pronounce name comes from the combination of various words with different meanings. Different parts of the name mean island, mountain and glacier.The volcano is 1,651 metres high, with a crater of up to 4 km in diameter, containing 3 main peaks. The mountain was once part of the coast, although it has now retreated.On 14 April 2010 Eyjafjallajökull started to erupt heavily from the top crater in the bottom left of the glacier. This made meltwater rush down into the nearby rivers. Many people had to be evacuated. Volcanic ash was thrown several kilometres into the atmosphere. The dust blew northwest over Europe on the 15th and 16th of April 2010. It became very dangerous for aeroplanes to fly and so all commercial flights were stopped in most parts of northern Europe. This caused chaos for travellers, many of whom were trying to return home after their Easter vacation. The chaos continued for many days.The Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland is known to everyone because of its most recent eruption in the year 2010 that disrupted the air traffic in entire Europe. Eyjafjallajökull, lying in south-west of Iceland, is a volcano covered by an ice cap. It has been an active volcano since many decades.A second eruption then began beneath the ice cap near the summit of the volcano on 14 April. This eruption caused the melting of large amounts of ice, leading to flooding in southern Iceland.when it erupted in 2010,cloud of volcanic ash that grounded air traffic all across Europe.
