Add to that the most important part of this song – He repeats the word Hallelujah 4 times. The first and Third time sound like he’s searching for help and the Second and Fourth time sounds as though he has resigned himself to never getting any consolation from the word. Almost like it’s just empty and devoid of any immediate comfort for his broken heart and disillusionment when it comes to women and relationships there with. His tone and choice of words suggests that what really bothers him is that he invested time and emotion to an endeavor that has failed before and is realizing that it will again if he allows it.
I’ve never liked this song and I’ve questioned why most people think it’s a song of reverence. In fact, like Cohen's original, the Buckley version was not released as a single until much later, and it did not chart until 2006, posthumously for Buckley. In 2004, Rolling Stone declared Buckley’s cover one of the greatest songs ever recorded. I tried to bring somes systematic order in the Hallelujah lyrics in the different versions. Tim fathered an illegitimate child with Mary Guibert, who Buckley would hardly have any contact with.
His version was included in his self-titled debut album and his second studio album, Who I Am. Lisa Hordijk, winner of the 2009 Dutch X Factor, released "Hallelujah" as her debut single, which went double platinum and remained at the top of the Dutch charts for ten weeks. Jeff Buckley, inspired by Cale's earlier cover, recorded one of the most acclaimed versions of "Hallelujah" for his only complete album, Grace, in 1994. It was released as a single in 2007, ten years after Buckley's death. "Hallelujah" is a song written by Canadian singer Leonard Cohen, originally released on his album Various Positions .

Most commentators see this as a more secular song, identifying with the way in which lovers worship one another. There has been much speculation about '15 verses' of Cohen's song, based on a comment made by John Cale. It looks like this involves seeing each verse as two verses , which gives 14 verses. The mystical 15th could merely reflect a slight change in lyrics of one verse, or may simply have been a mistake by Cale.

I think this is definitely about a relationship he was in and its stages. References to God and the bible just parts of his comparisons to what he has been thru from the beginning of the relationship to the end. The indication to me is most relationships run this course over time.
