Key Terms:

Addictive- A characteristic of a substance that creates a physical or psychological craving or need.

Advocacy- Supporting a particular action or cause that you believe in.

Advocate- A person who defends or pleads for a cause.

Alcohol- A colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid used in cleaning solutions, explosives, and intoxicating beverages; when used in beverages, alcohol acts as a depressant on the body.

Alcohol Poisoning- A condition that occurs when a person drinks alcohol very rapidly or drinks large amounts of alcohol at one time; can lead to coma or death.

Alcoholism- An illness in which people have difficulty controlling their drinking; also called alcohol dependence.

Anabolic Steroid- A drug made of a synthetic version of the male hormone testosterone; characterized by or promoting constructive metabolism, particularly muscle growth.

Binge Drinking- Consuming a large amount of alcohol in a short amount of time; also called chugging, doing shots, gulping, or downing.

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)- A measure of the amount of alcohol in the blood; also called blood alcohol concentration.

Carcinogen- A substance that tends to produce cancer.

Consequence- The effect, result, or outcome of something that occurred earlier.

Dependence- A condition characterized by chemical need for a drug; also called addition.

Depressant- A drug that slows down the body’s functions.

Dissociative- A drug that produces feelings of detachment.

Driving Under the Influence (DUI)- Operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol; also called driving while intoxicated/impaired (DWI).

Driving While Intoxicated/Impaired (DWI)- Operating a vehicle while intoxicated or impaired by drugs or alcohol; in some states, also called driving under the influence (DUI).

Drug Abuse- The use of any drug for nonmedical reasons.

Drug Misuse- Taking a legal drug inappropriately.

Drug Use- The proper use of a drug by the intended person.

Ecstasy- A stimulant and hallucinogenic drug that causes problems regulating emotions and sleep.

Hallucinogen- A drug that produces a distorted perception of reality.

Influences- Factors that affect someone or something, either positively or negatively; can be external (coming from the outside) or internal (coming from inside the self).

Inhalant- A toxic household chemical that is inhaled through the nose or the mouth.

Inhibition- An inner restraint to expressing yourself or acting freely.

Intoxicated- Affected by alcohol; drunk.

Ketamine- A legal anesthetic that is sometimes used illegally as a dissociative drug.

LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide)- A hallucinogenic drug that alters perceptions and emotions.

Marijuana- A drug made from the Cannabis or hemp plant, usually smoked or eaten to induce euphoria.

Media- A form of communication, such as television, radio, and newspapers.

Medicine- A substance used to treat disease or pain and manage a physical or mental condition.

Narcotic- Also called opiate, an addictive drug that reduces pain, alters mood and behavior, and usually induces sleep or stupor.

Nicotine- One of the chemicals in cigarette smoke; the substance to which smokers become addicted.

Prescription- A doctor's written order for a medicine.

Proof- The amount of alcohol in a drink or bottle of liquor.

Secondhand Smoke- What is issued from a burning cigarette, cigar, or pipe or when a smoker exhales.

Stimulant- An addictive drug that produces short-term energy and euphoria while raising heart rate and blood pressure.

Tobacco- A plant used in manufacturing cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and snuff.

Tobacco Control- A process or movement of people who help establish communities in which people do not use tobacco.
